Surrogacy and embryo donation remain beneficial but controversial infertility therapies. This is the first report of a pregnancy and subsequent birth of healthy twins following a surrogacy involving a female patient's biological mother as surrogate, but using anonymously donated embryos. Due to the novelty of combining intergenerational surrogacy with embryo donation, the legal side of adoption has taken over 3 years to complete. Intergenerational surrogacy using donated embryos can successfully provide a family with a third generation, offering an alternative to adoption of genetically unrelated children without involvement in the pregnancy. The legal and ethical aspects of the treatment and eventual adoption are discussed.

Background: Surrogate production by germline stem cell transplantation is a powerful method to produce donor-derived gametes via a host, a practice known as surrogacy. The gametes produced by surrogates are often analysed on the basis of their morphology and species-specific genotyping, which enables conclusion to be drawn about the donor's characteristics. However, in-depth information, such as data on epigenetic changes, is rarely acquired.

Parents tend to internalize the coparenting model they experienced during childhood and enact it in their coparenting relationships as adults. These interactive patterns may, in turn, shape their children's internal working models of attachment relationships. The present study recruited 31 gay and 28 heterosexual single-father families through surrogacy to examine family alliance quality and the mediating role of observed supportive and conflictual coparenting in the association between the coparenting quality single fathers experienced in their families of origin and the attachment security of their children.

For different motives, couples in need of third party assisted reproduction sometimes prefer the help of a family member over an unrelated collaborator. Quantitative (frequency) and qualitative (experience) data about this practice are lacking or scarce. Forms of intrafamilial medically assisted reproduction (IMAR) are different with respect to (i) familial closeness between the collaborator and the person whose reproductive contribution he or she replaces and whether assistance would be intra- or intergenerational, (ii) the relationship between the collaborator and the fertile partner (this relationship may or may not be consanguineous) and (iii) with regard to the material (sperm and oocytes) that is donated and the services (surrogacy) that are offered.
