In vivo biocompatibility of glass ionomer cements (GICs) was evaluated for use in orthopaedic surgery using a rat model and compared with conventional bone cement, Polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA. The unset GICs and PMMA were inserted into the marrow cavities of rat femora and retained in situ for various periods of time. The PMMA bone cement showed complete biocompatibility with no interference with reparative bone. The conventional GIC with smaller glass particles and lower powder/liquid ratio showed an initial minor toxic effect on rat bone tissue with later disturbance of adjacent bone formation. The conventional GIC with larger-size glass particles and higher powder/liquid ratio and resin-modified GIC showed more severe toxic effect on rat tissue with the resin-modified GIC affecting the rat bone tissue later. The causes of toxicity associated with the conventional GIC with larger glass particles and higher powder/liquid ration and the resin-modified GIC are thought to be related with the unreacted acid component of both materials and longer ongoing metallic ion release.

Rotator cuff tendon injuries often lead to shoulder pain and dysfunction. Traditional treatments such as surgery and physical therapy can provide temporary relief, but it is difficult to achieve complete healing of the tendon, mainly because of the limited repair capacity of the tendon cells. Therefore, it is particularly urgent to explore new treatment methods.

Despite the high incidence of poor graft integration in these patients and the resulting high failure rate, little consideration has been given to the quality of the bone into which the graft is anchored at reconstruction. Therefore, we investigated post ACL injury mineralized tissue changes in the ACL femoral entheses of young males and compared them to changes previously reported for young females.

Bone marrow aspiration is an essential procedure for diagnosing hematological conditions and therapeutic applications, such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) therapy for non-union of bones. This report presents a case of a 35-year-old male with femoral non-union treated with BMAC, requiring the collection of a large bone marrow aspirate volume. A novel, low-cost modification to the standard bone marrow aspiration apparatus was developed using components from an intravenous (IV) drip set, including a rubber bulb connector and a luer lock connector.

Cochlear-facial dehiscence (CFD) is a relatively new diagnosis which occurs when the bony partition between the labyrinthine segment of the facial nerve and the cochlea is dehiscent. This is considered one of several third window lesions which produce varying degrees of auditory and vestibular symptoms. Imaging studies have identified a consistently higher incidence of CFD when compared with the only histopathologic study present in the literature.

Silk protein, as a natural polymer material with unique structures and properties, exhibits tremendous potential in the biomedical field. Given the limited production and restricted properties of natural silk proteins, molecular biotechnology has been extensively applied in silk protein genetic engineering to produce novel silk proteins with specific properties. This review outlines the roles of major model organisms, such as silkworms and spiders, in silk protein production, and provides a detailed introduction to the applications of gene editing technologies (eg, CRISPR-Cas9), transgenic expression technologies, and synthetic biology techniques in silk protein genetic engineering.
