As a gas molecule, hydrogen sulfide (HS) exerts neuroprotective effects. Despite its recognized importance, there remains a need for a deeper understanding of HS's impact on vascular smooth muscle cells and its role in ischemic brain injury. This study employs encompassing cultured primary cerebral vascular smooth muscle cells, oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation model, in vitro vascular tone assessments, in vivo middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion experimentation in male rats, and the utilization of ROCK knockout, to unravel the intricate relationship between H2S and cerebrovascular diastolic function.

Numerous in vitro and in vivo experimental studies indicate that neuropeptide Y Y2 receptors (Y2R) are potential targets for neuroprotective therapy, including neuroprotection against ischemic stroke in healthy rats. Since stroke in humans is typically associated with comorbidities and long-term hypertension is the most common comorbidity leading to stroke, this study aimed to assess the neuroprotective potential of the Y2R agonist NPY13-36 in the rats with essential hypertension (SHR) subjected to 90 min middle cerebral artery suture occlusion with subsequent reperfusion (MCAOR). The cerebrocortical microflow in the ischemic focus and penumbra was continuously monitored with a Laser-Doppler flowmeter.

Background: Rutin, often known as vitamin P, is a natural flavonoid compound, which offers a broad spectrum of therapeutic potentials. Rutin is metabolised to different compounds by the gut bacteria after consumption, therefore, very little is absorbed. Higher plants contribute to rutin synthesis in large quantities, and it may also be found in many fruits and fruity rinds, particularly citrus fruits and berries.

Purpose: Hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for early lesions of diabetic retinal disease (DRD). Updating the DRD staging system to incorporate relevant basic and cellular mechanisms pertinent to DRD is necessary to better address early disease, disease progression, the use of therapeutic interventions, and treatment effectiveness.
Design: We sought to review preclinical and clinical evidence on basic and cellular mechanisms potentially pertinent to DRD that might eventually be relevant to update the DRD staging system.

Ischemic stroke is the most important cause of disability and death worldwide, but current treatments remain limited. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) including the herb pair of Zhiqiao-Danggui (ZD) offers a multifaceted treatment approach through promoting blood circulation, yet its specific anti-ischemic mechanism remains unclear. This study used the photochemically induced thrombosis (PIT) mouse model and the oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) cell model to explore the therapeutic effect of ZD on ischemic stroke.
