Uterine peristalsis: comparison of transvaginal ultrasound and two different sequences of cine MR imaging.

Published: September 2004

Purpose: To compare uterine peristalsis as seen on two different magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequences and transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), so as to better determine the best method for evaluating uterine peristalsis.

Materials And Methods: Eleven women in the periovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle underwent TVUS and cine MR imaging within a time period of three hours. Findings on cine MR images obtained with a serial 60 half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) sequence and a 300 true fast imaging with steady-state precession (FISP) sequence were compared with TVUS.

Results: The image quality of the HASTE technique was the best among the three methods, followed by TVUS, and then true FISP technique (P < 0.001). Uterine peristalsis was detected in 100% of subjects using HASTE, 82% with True FISP, and 100% with TVUS. With HASTE technique, true FISP, and TVUS, respectively, endometrial stripping movement was identified in 100%, 82%, and 100%; direction was identified in 100%, 45% (P = 0.014), and 73%; and wave conduction toward the outer myometrium was identified in 55%, 9% (P = 0.025), and 0% (P = 0.014).

Conclusion: Cine MR imaging by HASTE technique with a time resolution of two seconds best delineated uterine peristalsis compared to that by true FISP technique or with TVUS.

Objective: To retrospectively investigate the efficacy of phloroglucinol administration after freeze-thawed embryo transfer in patients experiencing recurrent implantation failure (RIF).

Materials And Methods: A total of 139 infertile couples who experienced RIF undergoing in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer were divided into the control (n = 66) and the phloroglucinol (n = 73) groups. Women in the phloroglucinol group received 80 mg phloroglucinol 30 min after transfer, then once daily up to day 3 after the embryo transfer.

Mechanism of Endometrial Receptivity Affected by Fibroids.

Am J Reprod Immunol

December 2024

Center of Reproductive Medicine, Weifang People's Hospital, Weifang, China.

Fibroids are the most common benign tumors of the female reproductive system. Most patients with fibroids are asymptomatic, but the presence of fibroids can still cause some abnormal clinical symptoms, such as increased menstrual volume, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract compression symptoms, etc. The impact of fibroids on pregnancy is worth discussing.

Rationale: The postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction after cesarean section is commonly presented as uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain and distension. As a novel traditional Chinese medicine characteristic therapy, the fire dragon cupping can effectively enhance intestinal peristalsis and improve the gastrointestinal discomforts by using the manipulation and moxibustion heat to stimulate acupuncture points. The purpose of this report is to provide a new approach and new ideas for rapid rehabilitation of gastrointestinal dysfunction after cesarean section.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) influences uterine peristalsis (UP) patterns in nonpregnant participants, using a noninvasive UP imaging system to gather data.
  • Conducted at a university medical center, the research included 28 participants who underwent imaging during the four phases of the menstrual cycle, comparing UP measurements before and during TVUS.
  • Results indicated that TVUS significantly altered the frequency, magnitude, and duration of UP waves across all menstrual phases, suggesting that noninvasive methods might better assess physiological uterine activity.

Study Question: Can a functional in vitro model, containing the main cellular components of the uterine wall, be generated from cells derived from patient tissues?

Summary Answer: We present a three-dimensional (3D) physiologically relevant, organ-on-a-chip model of the uterine wall containing primary endometrial and myometrial cellular participants, generated from human uterine tissue.

What Is Known Already: As a highly dynamic reproductive organ, the human uterus plays fundamental physiological roles in menstruation and childbirth. The endometrial-myometrial junction (EMJ) defines the interface between the inner mucosal layer (endometrium) and outer smooth muscle zone (myometrium) that comprises the uterine wall.
