Impairment of cognitive functions, particularly long-term (episodic) and working memory, is one of the earliest prognostic symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, both cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration being mediated by amyloid-beta neurotoxicity. Effects of intracerebroventricular administration of amyloid-beta peptide (25-35) [A beta(25-35)] to rats on the retention of previously learned task in an 8-armed radial maze was studied. A beta(25-35) was injected bilaterally, at doses of 15 or 30 nmol/rat, 7 days after the preliminary learning. The performance in the maze was tested 60 days after the surgery. A beta(25-35) impaired the short-term memory, with no significant effect on the long-term memory. No dose dependence could be demonstrated.

A novel phosphate-solubilizing and zinc-solubilizing actinobacterium strain YIM S08009 was isolated from rhizosphere soil collected from Pinus yunnanensis in Wuliangshan National Nature Reserve, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, southwest PR China. Cells of strain YIM S08009 were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, irregular rods to cocci, and formed yellow and white colonies on nutrient agar. Growth was observed at 10-40 °C (optimum 25-35 °C), pH 6.

Based on the established neuroprotective properties of indole-based compounds and their significant potential as multi-targeted therapeutic agents, a series of synthetic indole-phenolic compounds was evaluated as multifunctional neuroprotectors. Each compound demonstrated metal-chelating properties, particularly in sequestering copper ions, with quantitative analysis revealing approximately 40% chelating activity across all the compounds. In cellular models, these hybrid compounds exhibited strong antioxidant and cytoprotective effects, countering reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the Aβ(25-35) peptide and its oxidative byproduct, hydrogen peroxide, as demonstrated by quantitative analysis showing on average a 25% increase in cell viability and a reduction in ROS levels to basal states.

Background: Fluoroethylnormemantine (FENM), a new Memantine (MEM) derivative, prevented amyloid-β[25-35] peptide (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity in mice, a pharmacological model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with high predictive value for drug discovery. Here, as drug infusion is likely to better reflect drug bioavailability due to the interspecies pharmacokinetics variation, we analyzed the efficacy of FENM after chronic subcutaneous (SC) infusion, in comparison with IP injections in two AD mouse models, Aβ-injected mice and the transgenic APP/PSEN1 (APP/PS1) line.
Methods: In Aβ-treated mice, FENM was infused at 0.

Crustacean female sex hormone (CFSH) was first identified as a female eyestalk-specific factor involved in the female sexual development in blue crab. Whether CFSH has conserved role in other decapod species remains to be clarified. In this study, we identified a CFSH gene (MrCFSH) in the Z and W chromosomes from the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii genome.
