The purpose of this study was (a) to assess the intensity and energy cost of a single-set resistance training (RT) protocol as recommended by the recent American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines for older adults and (b) to compare obtained values to those recently reported as eliciting health benefits via endurance-based physical activity (PA). Five males and 5 females (73.1 +/- 5.5 years) performed 1 set of 15 repetitions of 8 RT exercises while connected to a portable metabolic unit (CosMed K4b2). The RT intensity (metabolic equivalents [METs]) was 3.3 +/- 0.7 (males) and 3.0 +/- 0.6 (females). Energy cost (kcal) was 84.2 +/- 14.6 (males) and 69.7 +/- 17.4 (females). We conclude that a single-set 8-exercise RT protocol may be a feasible alternative for achieving moderate intensity (3-6 METs) for older adults but that additional sets and/or repetitions appear to be necessary to accumulate moderate amounts (150-200 kcal) of PA.

The oxidation of 5-HMF to HMFCA is an important yet complex process, as it generates high-value chemical intermediates. Achieving this transformation efficiently requires the development of non-precious, highly active catalysts derived from renewable biomass sources. In this work, we introduce UoM-1 (UoM, University of Mazandaran), a novel cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) synthesized using a simple one-step ultrasonic irradiation method.

Real-world emissions of particulate matter (PM) and smoke opacity were studied for an older-model diesel pickup truck during four types of driving tests, namely fixed-point test, snap-acceleration test, road test, and hill road test (uphill/downhill). A portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) and an opacimeter were used to measure real-time concentrations of PM and smoke opacity, respectively, and simultaneously. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive association between PM and opacity, suggesting the feasibility of using an opacimeter to estimate PM mass emissions from diesel vehicles.

Those who rely on durable medical equipment (DME) for their health are more likely to be energy insecure and face higher energy burdens than those who do not. In this article, we evaluate the costs of electricity to run DMEs. We find that the average cost across the most common types of high-frequency DMEs-including oxygen concentrators, continuous positive airway pressure machines, and peritoneal kidney dialysis machines-is between $120 and $333 per year, depending on device size and usage frequency.

A cost-effective industrial TiOSO solution was employed to fabricate visible light active sulfur-doped titanium dioxide (S-TiO) via a facile hydrothermal method. The effect of calcination temperature on morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and photocatalytic property of S-TiO was systematically investigated. Successful incorporation of sulfur into TiO was confirmed by carbon-sulfur analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

This study presents an eco-friendly, cost-effective approach for synthesizing highly efficient nanocatalysts with the help of organic waste. Iron nanoparticles (INPs) were synthesized from aqueous extracts of potato, potato peel, and potato leaf and were evaluated for their photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of methylene blue dye. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed FeO nanoparticles cubic crystal structure with the smallest crystallite size (9.
