Objective: To compare the efficacy of forced-air warmers and radiant heaters on rewarming after cardiac surgery in a prospective randomized study.
Methods: Fifty male patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery were studied. The control group (Gr. C, n=10) was nursed under a standard hospital blanket. Two groups were treated with forced-air warmers: WarmTouch 5700 (Gr. WT, n=10) and Bair Hugger 500 (Gr. BH, n=10). Two other groups were treated by radiant heaters: the Aragona Thermal Ceilings CTC X radiant heater (Gr. TC, n=10) and a self assembled radiant heater of 4 Hydrosun 500 infrared lamps (Gr. HY, n=10). Changes of oesophageal temperature, mean skin temperature, mean body temperature and relative heat balance were calculated from oesophageal temperature, 4 skin temperatures and oxygen consumption (VO(2)).
Results: All actively treated groups with exception of the TC group showed significantly faster oesophageal warming than the control group. The mean body temperature increased 1.1 (0.7-1.7) degrees Ch(-1) in Gr. WT, 1.3 (0.7-1.5) degrees Ch(-1) in Gr. BH, 0.8 (0.5-1.4) degrees Ch(-1) in Gr. TC and 0.7 (0.4-1.0) degrees Ch(-1) in Gr. HY compared to Gr. C with 0.4 (0.2-0.7) degrees Ch(-1). The mean VO(2) and the maxima of the VO(2) during the study period did not differ significantly between the groups.
Conclusion: In the current setting active warming, forced-air warming more than radiant warming, increased speed of rewarming two- to threefold in comparison to insulation with a blanket.

The rapid mutation of SARS-CoV-2 has led to multiple rounds of large-scale breakthrough infection and reinfection worldwide. However, the dynamic changes of humoral and cellular immunity responses to several subvariants after infection remain unclear. In our study, a 6-month longitudinal immune response evaluation was conducted on 118 sera and 50 PBMC samples from 49 healthy individuals who experienced BA.

The introduction of hydrophobic side chain structures in anion exchange membranes (AEMs) to facilitate ion transport has been widely studied; however, low or moderate hydrophobic hydrocarbon and semifluorinated side chains are insufficient to induce a high degree of microphase separation. Herein, we design and prepare poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs with completely methylene-free perfluorinated side chains, which can maximize the thermodynamic incompatibility between main- and side chains, thus enhancing microphase separation at medium ion exchange capacities (IECs). According to the molecular dynamics study, the methylene-free perfluorinated side chain leads to better hydration of cations.

Background: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase (21OH) deficiency is an autosomal recessive inborn error of cortisol biosynthesis, with varying degrees of aldosterone production. There is a continuum of phenotypes which generally correlate with genotype and the expected residual 21OH activity of the less severely impaired allele. CYP21A1P/CYP21A2 chimeric genes caused by recombination between CYP21A2 and its highly homologous CYP21A1P pseudogene are common in CAH and typically associated with salt-wasting CAH, the most severe form.

A biphenylene network, the first synthesized non-graphene planar carbon allotrope composed entirely of sp-hybridized carbon atoms, has attracted widespread interest due to its unique structure, and electronic and mechanical properties. A pristine biphenylene network is metallic, and the effective regulation of its electronic properties will greatly expand its application in the fields of optoelectronics, nanoelectronic devices and photocatalysis. In this paper, the hydrogenation and halogenation of biphenylene networks were investigated using density functional theory, and their electronic properties were tuned by varying the functionalization concentration.

Purpose: Differentiation between obstructive and central apneas and hypopneas requires quantitative measurement of respiratory effort (RE) using esophageal pressure (PES), which is rarely implemented. This study investigated whether the sleep mandibular movements (MM) signal recorded with a tri-axial gyroscopic chin sensor (Sunrise, Namur, Belgium) is a reliable surrogate of PES in patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Patients And Methods: In-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) with PES and concurrent MM monitoring was performed.
