The electroencephalographic (EEG) effects of two choline pivaloyl esters, [2-(2,2-dimethylpropionyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium iodide (1) and [2-(2,2-dimethylpropionyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium 2,2-dimethylpropionate (2), were evaluated in scopolamine-treated or nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) lesioned rats. In scopolamine-treated animals, Compounds 1 and 2 prevented or reduced EEG effects, such as increased amplitude of total spectra and high-voltage spindle (HVS) activity as well. Furthermore, choline esters showed a noticeable effectiveness in reversing the EEG changes produced in rats by AMPA-induced lesion of NBM. Indeed, Compounds 1 and 2 were able to induce EEG desynchronisation, a significant decrease in the total EEG power (0.25-16 Hz) and in the lower frequency delta and theta bands (0.25-3 and 3-6 Hz, respectively). The EEG effects produced by Compounds 1 and 2 were well comparable with that evoked by Tacrine, used as a reference compound. The results of the present work allow us to put forward the hypothesis that the EEG effects observed are most likely mediated through the stimulation of the cholinergic neurotransmission ensuing from enhanced cerebral levels of acetylcholine (ACh) consequent upon acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition by choline pivaloyl esters.

Objective: Temporal encephaloceles (TEs) are seen in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE); yet they are also common incidental findings. Variability in institutional pre-surgical epilepsy practices and interpretation of epileptogenic network localization contributes to bias in existing epilepsy cohorts with TE, and therefore the relevance of TE in DRE remains controversial. We sought to estimate effect sizes and sample sizes necessary to demonstrate clinically relevant improvements in seizure outcome with different surgical approaches.

Introduction: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a global health issue, and its nonspecific causes make treatment challenging. Understanding the neural mechanisms of CLBP should contribute to developing effective therapies.
Objectives: To compare current source density (CSD) and functional connectivity (FC) extracted from resting electroencephalography (EEG) between patients with CLBP and healthy controls and to examine the correlations between EEG indices and symptoms.

Enhancing the accuracy of emotion recognition models through multimodal learning is a common approach. However, challenges such as insufficient modal feature learning in multimodal inference and scarcity of sample data continue to pose obstacles that need to be overcome. Therefore, we propose a novel adaptive lightweight multimodal efficient feature inference network (ALME-FIN).

Former studies have established that individuals with a cochlear implant (CI) for treating single-sided deafness experience improved speech processing after implantation. However, it is not clear how each ear contributes separately to improve speech perception over time at the behavioural and neural level. In this longitudinal EEG study with four different time points, we measured neural activity in response to various temporally and spectrally degraded spoken words presented monaurally to the CI and non-CI ears (5 left and 5 right ears) in 10 single-sided CI users and 10 age- and sex-matched individuals with normal hearing.

Chunk memory constitutes the basic unit that manages long-term memory and converts it into immediate decision-making processes, it remains unclear how to interpret and organize incoming information to form effective chunk memory. This paper investigates electroencephalography (EEG) patterns from the perspective of time-domain feature extraction using chunk memory in visual statistical learning and combines time-resolved multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA). The GFP and MVPA results revealed that chunk memory processes occurred during specific time windows in the learning phase.
