A new crystal form of penicillin acylase (penicillin amidohydrolase, E.C. 3.5.1.11) from Escherichia coli W (ATCC 11105) is reported. The crystals were grown using a combination of hanging-drop and streak-seeding methods. The crystals are in the monoclinic space group P2(1) with cell dimensions a = 51.52, b = 131.95, c = 64.43 A, beta = 106.12 degrees. There is one heterodimer in the asymmetric unit (V(m) = 2.45 A(3) Da(-1)) and the solvent content is 49%. Preliminary data have been collected to d(min) = 2.7 A using a MAR Research image plate and a rotating-anode X-ray source. Subsequent experiments show diffraction beyond 1.3 A at a synchrotron radiation source.

Background: Urolithiasis (kidney stone) is a common condition that often leads patients to urgent or emergency care services. Urinary calculi are generally found in the kidneys, ureters, or bladder. Urethral calculi are uncommon and can result from the migration of a calculus in the upper urinary tract or vesicle or may be primary of the urethra.

A strong n-type perovskite layer is crucial in achieving high open-circuit voltage (V) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) in the p-i-n solar cells, as the weak n-type perovskites result in a loss of V, and the p-type perovskites contain numerous electron traps that cause the severe carrier recombination. Here, three types of perylene diimide (PDI) based small molecule dopants with different dimensions, including 1D-PDI, 2D-PDI, and 3D-PDI are designed, to produce heavier n-type perovskites. The PDI-based molecules with Selenium atoms have a strong electron-donating ability, effectively enlarging the quasi-Fermi level splitting within the perovskites.

We have developed a portfolio of antibody-based modules that can be prefabricated as standalone units and snapped together in plug-and-play fashion to create uniquely powerful multifunctional assemblies. The basic building blocks are derived from multiple pairs of native and modified Fab scaffolds and protein G (PG) variants engineered by phage display to introduce high pair-wise specificity. The variety of possible Fab-PG pairings provides a highly orthogonal system that can be exploited to perform challenging cell biology operations in a straightforward manner.

Truncated hemoglobins (TrHbs) have an ancient origin and are widely distributed in microorganisms where they often serve roles other than dioxygen transport and storage. In extremophiles, these small heme proteins must have features that secure function under challenging conditions: at minimum, they must be folded, retain the heme group, allow substrates to access the heme cavity, and maintain their quaternary structure if present and essential. The genome of the obligate psychropiezophile Shewanella benthica strain KT99 harbors a gene for a TrHb belonging to a little-studied clade of globins (subgroup 2 of group N).

Due to the limited active sites and poor conductivity, the application of tungsten disulfide (WS) in alkaline water electrolysis remains a challenge. Herein, Ni-WS nanosheet arrays were in situ grown on the carbon fiber paper (Ni-WS/CFP) as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, and the introduction degree of Ni can be regulated by adjusting the electrodeposition time. When the electrodeposition time is 3 min, Ni ions are doped into the lattice of WS, and by prolonging the electrodeposition time to 10 min, the nickel disulfide (NiS) crystal phase is generated to form NiS@WS heterojunction.
