Purpose: Several studies have suggested that the insertion (I) variant rather than the deletion (D) variant of the human angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with elite endurance performance. The aim of this study was to determine whether the ID polymorphism is associated with the performance of the fastest finishers of the South African Ironman Triathlons.
Methods: A total of 447 Caucasian male triathletes of a variety of nationalities and athletic ability who completed either the 2000 or 2001 South African Ironman Triathlons and 199 Caucasian male control subjects were genotyped for the ACE ID polymorphism.
Results: There was a significantly higher frequency of the I allele in the fastest 100 South African-born finishers (103 I, 51.5% and 97 D, 48.5%) compared with the 166 South African-born control subjects (140 I, 42.2% and 192 D, 57.8%) (P = 0.036). There was also a significant linear trend for the allele distribution among the fastest 100 finishers (I allele = 51.5%), slowest 100 finishers (I allele = 47.5%), and control (I allele = 42.2%) South African-born subjects (P = 0.033). There was, however, no significant difference in the ACE genotype or allele frequencies when athletes born outside South Africa were analyzed.
Conclusion: To our knowledge this is the first study that has examined the effect of an athlete's ACE genotype on their actual performance during an ultra-endurance race. The I allele of the ACE gene was associated with the endurance performance of the fastest 100 South African-born finishers in these triathlons.

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by the accumulation of activated histiocytes within affected tissues. The original haematopathological description of RDD has links to the late South African born haematopathologist, Ronald Dorfman, with a descriptive account of two cases of the disease treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital are described herein. Alongside the two case descriptions is a meta-analysis of 149 published cases from the African continent.

Objective: To improve detection of abnormal glucose tolerance (Abnl-GT), attention has moved beyond the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), to non-fasting markers of glycemia, specifically, HbA1c, fructosamine (FA) and glycated albumin (GA). Emerging data suggest that in African descent populations, the combination of HbA1c and GA is superior to the combination of HbA1c and FA. Background: Understanding Black women's Papanicolaou (Pap) screening experiences can inform efforts to reduce cancer disparities. This study examined experiences among both US-born US Black women and Sub-Saharan African immigrant women.
Method: Using a convergent parallel mixed methods design, Black women born in the USA and in Sub-Saharan Africa age 21-65 years were recruited to participate in focus groups and complete a 25-item survey about patient-centered communication and perceived racial discrimination.
Background Little is known about the effect of region of origin on all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and stroke mortality among Black individuals. We examined associations between nativity and mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular, and stroke) in Black individuals in the United States. Methods and Results Using the National Health Interview Service 2000 to 2014 data and mortality-linked files through 2015, we identified participants aged 25 to 74 years who self-identified as Black (n=64 717).

Abnormal-glucose tolerance (Abnl-GT) is due to an imbalance between β-cell function and insulin resistance (IR) and is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD). In sub-Saharan Africa, β-cell failure is emerging as an important cause of Abnl-GT (Abnl-GT-β-cell-failure). Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume and hyperlipidemia are major contributors to CVD risk when Abnl-GT is due to IR (Abnl-GT-IR).
