Acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activity of Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles against Hyalomma anatolicum.

Trop Biomed

September 2024

General Science Department, Deanship of Supportive Studies, Alasala University, P. O. Box 12666, Dammam 31483, Saudi Arabia.

Current strategies for tick control have led to the development of resistance and environmental contamination. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research into new and effective acaricides for tick control. The aim of this study was to fabricate and characterize Linalool loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles (Lin@ZNP), and to assess the acaricidal, larvacidal, and repellent activities of Lin@ ZNP against Hyalomma anatolicum, a prevalent tick species infesting cattle in Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cotton seeds struggle with germination due to sensitivity to pests and environmental stresses; this study explored using zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles to improve seed quality.
  • - The nanoparticles were applied to two cotton varieties (H 1300 and H 1098-i), and various seed quality metrics were analyzed over 12 months to assess the impact of the treatments.
  • - Results showed that nanopriming with ZnO nanoparticles led to better seed quality retention compared to controls, while storage time and treatment type significantly affected most parameters measured, except for germination percentage in some cases.

Article Synopsis
  • * A bionic insect wing with a unique titanium dioxide nanoneedle (TNN) coating, enhanced with poly-dopamine and antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), was created to improve biocompatibility and sustain bactericidal effects.
  • * Testing showed that this AgNPs-PDA@TNN implant was effective in killing bacteria, promoting the growth of new bone, reducing inflammation, and modulating immune responses

Association between percutaneous absorption of benzophenone-3 and N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide among the general adult population.

Sci Total Environ

November 2024

Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, No. 87 Xiangya Road, Kaifu District, Changsha 410008, Hunan Province, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the skin absorption of benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a common sunscreen ingredient, and DEET, an insect repellent, using data from a large sample of US adults collected in the NHANES 2015-2016 survey.
  • Results showed that higher levels of BP-3 are positively correlated with the presence of DEET metabolites (DCBA and ECBA) in urine, indicating that BP-3 may enhance the absorption of DEET through the skin.
  • The correlation was particularly strong in specific groups, including middle-aged, non-Hispanic white males who frequently use sunscreen, suggesting demographic factors might influence absorption rates.

Neurotoxic and behavioral deficit in Drosophila melanogaster exposed to photocatalytic products of Paraquat.

Neurotoxicology

September 2024

Mitochondrial Metabolism and Neurotoxicology Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Institute of Exact and Earth Sciences, Federal University of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá, Brazil; Postgraduate Program in Biodiversity and Biotechnology of the BIONORTE Network (PPG-BIONORTE), Cuiabá, Brazil. Electronic address:

The Advanced Oxidative Processes have demonstrated potential for application in the degradation of organic pollutants, such as Paraquat (PQ) from water and wastewater, due to their low price, high efficiency, and non-toxic properties. In this study, we investigated whether the photodegradation of PQ with TiO nanotubes reduced its toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. However, dietary ingestion of degradation products PQ for larvae resulted in a low axial ratio (pupal volume).
