Following a veterinary and behavioral survey of chimpanzees from a natural population in Uganda, leaf samples of Trichilia rubescens were collected because of the unusual method of ingestion observed. The methanolic crude extract of T. rubescens leaves exhibited significant antimalarial activity in vitro. Bioassay-directed fractionation provided two new limonoids, trichirubines A and B. A greater understanding of the role of secondary compounds in the primate diet may be helpful in recovering naturally occurring compounds of medicinal significance for human medicine.

The FIKK protein family, encompassing 21 serine-threonine protein kinases, is a distinctive cluster exclusive to the Apicomplexa phylum. Predominantly located in which is a malarial parasite, with a solitary gene identified in a distinct apicomplexan species, this family derives its nomenclature from - phenylalanine, isoleucine, lysine, lysine (FIKK), a conserved amino acid motif. Integral to the parasite's life cycle and consequential to malaria pathogenesis, the absence of orthologous proteins in eukaryotic organisms designates it as a promising antimalarial drug target.

Malaria continues to pose a significant burden on populations in endemic areas and requires innovative treatment options. Here, we report the synthesis and preclinical evaluation of the novel 3-hydroxypropanamidine (HPA) , which shows excellent antiplasmodial activity against drug-sensitive and -resistant strains. Moreover, in various human cell lines, the compound shows no cytotoxicity and excellent parasite selectivity.
