A design study of monochromators for a 2.0 GeV electron/positron storage ring for high-brilliance synchrotron radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and the soft X-ray regions is described. Two types of VUV/soft X-ray grazing-incidence monochromators, one with a bent parabolic mirror and the other with a varied-spacing grating, are designed. Without any slope error, the expected resolving power of the former is much higher, but the latter is less affected by slope errors of the optical elements.

A new type of optical element that can focus a cylindrical wave to a point focus (or vice versa) is analytically described. Such waves are, for example, produced in a beamline where light is collimated in one direction and then doubly focused by a single optic. A classical example in X-ray optics is the collimated two-crystal monochromator, with toroidal mirror refocusing.

High-Resolution Strain/Stress Measurements by Three-Axis Neutron Diffractometer.

Resolution properties of the unconventional high-resolution neutron diffraction three-axis setup for strain/stress measurements of large bulk polycrystalline samples are presented. Contrary to the conventional two-axis setups, in this case, the strain measurement on a sample situated on the second axis is carried out by rocking the bent perfect crystal (BPC) analyzer situated on the third axis of the diffractometer. Thus, the so-called rocking curve provides the sample diffraction profile.

Spectral K-edge subtraction imaging and wide-field energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy imaging are novel, related, synchrotron imaging techniques for element absorption contrast imaging and element speciation imaging, respectively. These two techniques serve different goals but share the same X-ray optics principles with a bent Laue type monochromator and the same data processing algorithms. As there is a growing interest to implement these novel techniques in synchrotron facilities, Python-based software has been developed to automate the data processing procedures for both techniques.

First results are presented for synchrotron radiation diffraction in a paratellurite (TeO) single crystal investigated with a new experimental scheme consisting of a standard monochromator and a relatively narrow slit for collimation and monochromatization of an incident beam. The Bragg case reflection geometry is used. The monochromator, a pair of Si crystals, maintains the initial direction of the beam propagation.
