A scanning soft X-ray spectromicroscope was recently developed based mainly on the photon-in/photon-out measurement scheme for the investigation of local electronic structures on the surfaces and interfaces of advanced materials under conditions ranging from low vacuum to helium atmosphere. The apparatus was installed at the soft X-ray beamline (BL17SU) at SPring-8. The characteristic features of the apparatus are described in detail.

An optical design study of a bending-magnet beamline, based on multi-bend achromat storage ring lattices, at the High Energy Photon Source, to be built in Beijing, China, is described. The main purpose of the beamline design is to produce a micro-scale beam from a bending-magnet source with little flux loss through apertures. To maximize the flux of the focal spot, the synchrotron source will be 1:1 imaged to a virtual source by a toroidal mirror; a mirror pair will be used to collimate the virtual source into quasi-parallel light which will be refocused by a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror pair.

Micro-XAFS and chemical imaging techniques have been widely applied for studies of heterogeneously distributed systems, mostly in hard X-ray (>5 keV) or in soft X-ray (<1.5 keV) energies. The microprobe endstation of the SXRMB (soft X-ray microcharacterization beamline) at the Canadian Light Source is optimized at the medium energy (1.

A microprobe system has been installed on the nanoprobe/XAFS beamline (BL8C) at PLS-II, South Korea. Owing to the reproducible switch of the gap of the in-vacuum undulator (IVU), the intense and brilliant hard X-ray beam of an IVU can be used in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) experiments. For high-spatial-resolution microprobe experiments a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror system has been used to focus the millimeter-sized X-ray beam to a micrometer-sized beam.
