We have investigated the orientation ordering of two shish-kebab chains confined by spherically harmonic potentials through Monte Carlo simulations and asymptotic analysis. The rigid rod is modeled as shish-kebab chains consisting of tangent hard spheres aligned in the same axis, and the harmonic potential is chosen to model nonrigid cavities. We first show that the interactions between a rod and the spherically harmonic potential are independent of chain orientation, indicating that the alignment of two confined rods arises from the excluded volume interactions alone. In the strong fields, the order parameter of two confined rods converges to different values, depending on the parity of chain length. From asymptotic order parameters, we find that the rods of odd-number beads rotate more freely even under the limiting strong confinement. However, the two rods of even-number beads are essentially trapped in a configuration of perpendicular alignment through intercalation of their central grooves. We attribute the dependence of the parity of chain length to the different locations of the center-of-mass in a rod for these two cases. Furthermore, we compare the shish-kebab chains with different rod models in the simulations, and utilize these models to explore the effect of the local rod smoothness on molecular alignment. Our findings suggest that increasing local rod smoothness enhances the rotational degree of freedom for confined rods, and the effect of local rod roughness emerges under strong enough applied potentials.

The morphology of virgin reactor powder (RP) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with M = 160,000 g/mol was investigated using DSC, SEM, SAXS, and WAXS methods. The morphological SEM analysis showed that the main morphological units of RP are macro- and micro-shish-kebab structures with significantly different geometric dimensions, as well as individual lamellae of folded chain crystals. A quantitative analysis of an asymmetric SAXS reflection made it possible to reveal the presence of several periodic morphoses in the RP with long periods ranging from 20 nm to 60 nm, and to correlate them with the observed powder morphology.

A highly oriented poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA), with a blood vessel-like biomimetic structure, was fabricated using solid-phase hot drawing technology and homo-epitaxial crystallization to improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of PLLA. Long chain branched PLLA (LCB-PLLA) was prepared through a two-step ring-opening reaction, and a consequent draw as high as 1000 % was achieved during the hot drawing. The modulus and tensile strength were found to have increased through the formation of oriented shish-kebab like crystals along the drawing direction during processing.

Polyurethane (PU) materials with movable crosslinking were prepared by a typical two-step synthetic process using an acetylated γ-cyclodextrin (TAcγCD) diol compound. The soft segment of PU is polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF), and the hard segment consists of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and 1,3-propylene glycol (POD). The synthesized PU materials exhibited the typical mechanical characteristics of a movable crosslinking network, and the presence of hydrogen bonds from the urethane bonds resulted in a synergistic effect.

To increase the maximum internal pressure that a polyethylene (PE) pipe can withstand, a novel rotational shear system (RSS) was constructed in this study to fabricate PE pipes with enhanced hoop strength by applying hoop shear on the pipes using a rotational mandrel. The microstructure and morphology with the influences of melt plasticizing temperature on PE pipes processing under rotational shear were investigated indirectly using small-angle X-ray scattering and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS/WAXD) measurements. In the SAXS patterns, equatorial streaks and meridional scattering peaks were clearly observed in all three samples prepared at different melt plasticizing temperatures, 215, 235, and 255 °C.

The deformation-induced crystallization of an isotactic polypropylene (iPP) sheet containing a β-nucleating agent was evaluated. The phase transformation of the β-modifications was investigated and the crystal morphology was observed at room temperature after stretching at different temperatures. The results showed that the crystallinity increased after solid-state stretching.
