Published: February 2005

Objective: To determine the effect of two iodine-containing contrast agents used for coronary angiography on subsequent thyroid hormone concentrations.

Methods: We prospectively studied thyroid function in 56 patients, with no previous history of thyroid disease and normal findings on thyroid examinations, who underwent nonemergent cardiac catheterization. Thyroid hormone concentrations were assessed at baseline and at day 1 and day 7 after administration of a radiographic iodinated contrast agent (Renografin or Omnipaque).

Results: Use of Omnipaque and Renografin was not associated with significant changes in thyroid-stimulating hormone, total thyroxine, triiodothyronine resin uptake, free thyroxine index, or total triiodothyronine. Three patients had slightly increased thyroid-stimulating hormone concentrations at 7 days after angiography.

Conclusion: Administration of iodinated contrast agents for cardiac catheterization does not result in hyperthyroidism in patients with previously normal findings on thyroid examination.

For noninvasive light-based physiological monitoring, optimal wavelengths of individual tissue components can be identified using absorption spectroscopy. However, because of the lack of sensitivity of hardware at longer wavelengths, absorption spectroscopy has typically been applied for wavelengths in the visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) range from 400 to 1,000 nm. Hardware advancements in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) range have enabled investigators to explore wavelengths in the ~1,000 nm to 3,000 nm range in which fall characteristic absorption peaks for lipid, protein, and water.

Normative measurements of the frontal nerve by magnetic resonance imaging in an Australia cohort.

Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, University of Adelaide, North Terrace, Adelaide, SA, 5000, Australia.

Purpose: To report the normative dimensions of the frontal nerve (FN) on fat-suppressed suppressed gadolinium (fs-gad) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Method: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent coronal fs-gad T1-weighted MRI. Orbits were excluded if there was unilateral or bilateral pathology of the FN or optic nerve sheath (ONS), incomplete MRI sequences, poor image quality or indiscernible FN on radiological assessment.

In cardiovascular research, electromagnetic fields generated by Riga plates are utilized to study or manipulate blood flow dynamics, which is particularly crucial in developing treatments for conditions such as arterial plaque deposition and understanding blood behavior under varied flow conditions. This research predicts the flow patterns of blood enhanced with gold and maghemite nanoparticles (gold-maghemite/blood) in an electromagnetic microchannel influenced by Riga plates with a temperature gradient that decays exponentially, under sudden changes in pressure gradient. The flow modeling includes key physical influences like radiation heat emission and Darcy drag forces in porous media, with the flow mathematically represented through unsteady partial differential equations solved using the Laplace transform (LT) method.

Background: Adopting appropriate noninvasive radiological method is crucial for periodic surveillance of liver metastases in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients after surgery, which is closely related to clinical management and prognosis. This study aimed to prospectively enroll stage II-III CRC patients for the surveillance of liver metastases, and compare the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT) and non-enhanced abbreviated MRI (NE-AMRI) during this process.

Methods: 587 CRC patients undergoing radical resection of the primary tumor were evaluated by 1 to 3 rounds of surveillance tests, consisting of abdominal CE-CT and contrast-enhanced MRI (CE-MRI) within 7 days at 6-month intervals.
