Dr. Tobian has been involved in hypertension research and treatment for more than 50 years. His work on the sodium and water content in blood vessel walls and the protective effects of potassium has been widely accepted and incorporated into everyday practice decisions. Those of us who have interacted with this researcher and clinician marvel at his ability to translate basic science findings into practice. He has enlivened dozens of meetings with his to‐the‐point questions and cogent arguments. Dr. Tobian is one of the few investigators and clinicians who have been there, done that, and participated in the exciting ongoing saga of hypertension from the time when physicians believed a little high blood pressure was a good thing and couldn't be treated, to the present when we recognize risks of hypertension and reduce it with effective treatment. We asked Dr. Tobian to give us his thoughts about his research and where he believes hypertension treatment may be headed.
