Causes and treatment of burns from grease.

A large number of burns are sustained every year as the result of kitchen grease. A review of a 13-month period at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, revealed 60 cases (9.4% of acute burn admissions). Forty-five (75%) of these patients were adults and 25% were children. There were 23 females and 37 males. Forty-two percent of the adults and 33% of the children had some percentage of third-degree injury. The average total body surface area burn in adults was 5.9% and in children 6.3%. There were no deaths in this series. Burns usually occurred as the result of scalds with grease while cooking. Spilling grease on children in the kitchen was a frequent problem. Burns due to ignition of grease was also a cause of injury. Most of the injuries were potentially preventable, and therefore the importance of burn appropriate safety programs is stressed.

In this research, a sustainable blue-green infrastructure (BGI) was developed to efficiently remove contaminants from stormwater through a combined use of modified porous asphalt (PA) and microalgae cultivation to provide a potential drinking water (DW) source. According to the results, the modified PA with powder activated carbon (PAC) could successfully reduce the level of total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oil and grease to below the DW standards but failed to efficiently remove some heavy metals (HMs) and nutrient pollutants. The results revealed that the treated stormwater was an appropriate medium for microalgae cultivation.

Commercial grease interceptors (GIs), commonly used in food service establishments, are primarily designed to treat fat, oil and grease (FOG) from handwash sink (HS) wastewater. They are generally less effective for removing highly concentrated FOG from dishwasher (DW) effluents which contain highly emulsified FOG with complex long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). Furthermore, standard testing of GIs uses diesel fuel to simulate FOG separation; however, the flow properties of typical cooking oils and animal fats differ significantly from diesel.
