Global effects of histone modifications.

Brief Funct Genomic Proteomic

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Published: October 2003

The relationship between chromatin structure and transcriptional regulation has been the focus of many research publications over the past few years. A lot of progress has been made in understanding the role of histone modifications. The interdependence of histone methylation and DNA methylation has been revealed. Methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation and ubiquitination of specific histone residues are all able to affect the DNA binding of transcription factors and to change the structure of chromatin on a genome-wide scale. This review aims to summarise some of the experiments that demonstrated the global effects of the modifications of the five histone proteins, H1, H2A, H2B, H3 and H4.

Relative fire-proneness of land cover types in the Brazilian Atlantic forest.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

CE3C-Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes & CHANGE, Global Change and Sustainability Institute, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa, Campo Grande, C2, Piso 5, 1749-016, Lisboa, Portugal. Electronic address:

Fires are increasingly affecting tropical biomes, where landscape-fire interactions remain understudied. We investigate the fire-proneness-the likelihood of a land use or land cover (LULC) type burning more or less than expected based on availability-in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (AF). This biodiversity hotspot is increasingly affected by fires due to human activities and climate change.

Objective: As the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for businesses and worker safety and health, an interdisciplinary team launched the COVID-19 Worksite Impact Survey to assess COVID-19-related impacts and responses at small and medium businesses in 10 North Carolina counties.

Methods: We collected data from October 2 to December 1, 2020, and analyzed survey results to evaluate businesses' operational changes, concerns, needs, pandemic preparedness, workplace health promotion programming, and infection control practices.

Results: Most businesses, including essential ones, were inadequately prepared for the pandemic and did not implement the most effective COVID-19 infection control practices.

Background: The escalating global scarcity of skilled health care professionals is a critical concern, further exacerbated by rising stress levels and clinician burnout rates. Artificial intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a potential resource to alleviate these challenges. Nevertheless, it is not taken for granted that AI will inevitably augment human performance, as ill-designed systems may inadvertently impose new burdens on health care workers, and implementation may be challenging.

Background: HIV/AIDS remains a significant global challenge, and with the rapid advancement of technology, there has been an increasing number of interventions aimed at improving HIV/AIDS cognition and self-management behaviors among patients. However, there is still a lack of detailed literature integrating relevant evidence.

Objective: This study aims to comprehensively review existing research on interventions using modern information methods to improve HIV/AIDS cognition and enhance self-management behaviors among patients.

Effect of cardiomyocyte-specific lipid phosphate phosphatase 3 overexpression on high-fat diet-induced cardiometabolic dysfunction in mice.

Lipid phosphate phosphatase 3 (LPP3) is a membrane-bound enzyme that hydrolyzes lipid phosphates including the bioactive lipid, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). Elevated circulating LPA production and cellular LPA signaling are implicated in obesity-induced metabolic and cardiac dysfunction. Deletion of LPP3 in the cardiomyocyte increases circulating LPA levels and causes heart failure and mitochondrial dysfunction in mice.
