The inner ear organs responsible for hearing (cochlea) and balance (vestibular system) are susceptible to oxidative stress due to the high metabolic demands of their sensorineural cells. Oxidative stress-induced damage to these cells can cause hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction, yet the precise mechanisms remain unclear due to the limitations of animal models and challenges of obtaining living human inner ear tissue. Therefore, we developed an in vitro oxidative stress model of the pre-natal human inner ear using otic progenitor cells (OPCs) derived from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs).

is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes listeriosis, a severe foodborne illness that is particularly dangerous during pregnancy. It thrives in diverse environments, including refrigerated conditions and food production facilities, due to its adaptability to varying temperatures, pH levels, and salt concentrations. Its virulence stems from the ability to invade host cells, particularly macrophages and epithelial cells, and avoid, or at least postpone, immune detection by utilizing virulence factors such as internalins, listeriolysin O, and actin assembly-inducing protein.

Objective: This study aimed to identify risk factors for postpartum readmission (PPR) in class 3 obese patients undergoing unscheduled cesarean deliveries.
Study Design: Retrospective cohort study of patients with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥40 kg/m undergoing unscheduled cesarean delivery from 2017 to 2020 comparing patients with and without PPR (unexpected admission, emergency room/overnight observation visit, unscheduled outpatient visit, or ambulatory surgery within 30 days). Medical history, operative data, and postpartum outcomes were compared between the cohorts.

Background: Intraamniotic infection (IAI) affects 2%-5% of pregnancies, causing significant neonatal and maternal morbidity. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests ampicillin and gentamicin as first-line IAI treatment. Due to potential drug toxicity, changes in gentamicin susceptibility cutoff points, and rising Enterobacterales gentamicin and ampicillin resistance, changes in IAI antibiotic treatment were implemented at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Purpose: Meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) often signifies colonization of the amniotic sac by microorganisms. This study investigated additional adverse obstetric outcomes associated with MSAF in deliveries complicated by maternal intrapartum fever (IF).
Methods: This retrospective study included all singleton pregnancies from 2014 to 2020, with intrapartum maternal fever ≥ 38 °C during a trial of labor.
