The morphological and morphometric features of the scaphoid.

This cadaveric study used 200 scaphoid bones (100 left and 100 right) to assess 24 morphological and 11 morphometric parameters. At least one morphometric feature was absent in all scaphoids, though the tubercle and the dorsal sulcus were present in all instances. There were significant differences in the circumferences of the waist and the base of the tubercle, the width of the main sulcus and the secondary height of the tubercle between left and right scaphoids. Detailed knowledge of anatomy and correlations between the anatomical features may help better understanding of clinical problems.

Through selective breeding, humans have driven exceptional morphological diversity in domestic dogs, creating more than 200 recognized breeds developed for specialized functional tasks such as herding, protection, and hunting. Here, we use three-dimensional reconstructions of dog skulls to ask whether these function-oriented kennel-club groups reflect differences in morphology that correspond to those functions. Heart development involves the complex structural remodelling of a linear heart tube into an asymmetrically looped and ballooned organ. Previous studies have associated regional expansion of extracellular matrix (ECM) space with tissue morphogenesis during development. We have developed morphoHeart, a 3D tissue segmentation and morphometry software with a user-friendly graphical interface (GUI) that delivers the first integrated 3D visualisation and multiparametric analysis of both heart and ECM morphology in live embryos.

The role of phenotypic modularity in the evolution of skull morphology in birds has been a subject of debate in recent years. Furnariids (ovenbirds and woodcreepers), a spectacular avian adaptive radiation, are distinguished in their cranial morphology as the only passerines with two types of cranial kinesis, constituting a great model to test whether the evolution of novelties linked to kinesis was associated with shifts in patterns of evolutionary modularity and allometry in the avian skull. Our analyses by means of geometric morphometric tools and phylogenetic comparative methods show that the beak and neurocranium of furnariids evolved in a modular fashion and shaped by the cranial kinesis evolution.
