Use of continuous-wave Doppler echocardiography to evaluate the hemodynamic importance of atrial systole in patients with mitral stenosis.

Published: May 2005

Continuous-wave Doppler echocardiography was used to assess the hemodynamic role of left atrial systole and its effect on left ventricular performance in 31 patients with pure mitral stenosis. Seventeen (group I) had severe stenosis, and 14 (group II) had mild-to-moderate stenosis. The contribution of atrial systole to cardiac output was 15% in group I and 24% in group II (p < 0.01). This study shows the effectiveness of using continuous-wave Doppler echocardiography to assess the influence of atrial systole on left ventricular performance in patients with mitral stenosis.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is related to survival and right atrial (RA) size and function may play a role. Our objective is to assess the impact of RA function measured by strain (RAS) on outcome and end organ congestion. We enrolled 134 patients (mean age 73 ± 13 years, 62% women) with any TR grade or etiology and a complete echocardiogram, clinical follow up and renal function assessment.

Background: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) risk stratification in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) may be complicated by other potential causes of arrhythmia.

Objectives: We aimed to characterize SCA survivors with isolated (iMVP) and non-isolated MVP (non-iMVP) and to assess their long-term follow-up.

Methods: This ambispective study included 75 patients with MVP who experienced SCA and were treated in our center between 2009-2024.

Severe vitamin D (vitD) deficiency is a very common condition in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and it is predictor of poor prognosis. There is emerging evidence suggesting a connection between the insufficient response to phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5i) and vitD deficiency in patients with PAH. In the present translational study, vitD deficiency was induced in Wistar rats by exposure to vitD free diet for 5 weeks and followed by Su5416 administration and hypoxia (10%) for 3 weeks, a standard experimental model of PAH.

Central sleep apnea (CSA), a rare polysomnographic finding in the general population, is prevalent in certain cardiovascular conditions including systolic and diastolic left ventricular dysfunction, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, carotid artery stenosis, stroke and use of certain cardiac-related medications. Polysomnographic findings of CSA with adverse cardiovascular impacts include nocturnal hypoxemia and arousals, which can lead to increased sympathetic activity both at night and in the daytime. Among cardiovascular diseases, CSA is most prevalent in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction; a large study of more than 900 treated patients has shown a dose dependent relationship between nocturnal desaturation and mortality.

Objectives: The size, shape, and contractility of the heart's atrial chambers have not been evaluated in fetuses with growth restriction (FGR) or who are small-for-gestational-age (SGA) as defined by the Delphi consensus protocol. This study aimed to examine the atrial chambers using speckle tracking analysis to identify any changes that may be specific for either growth disturbance.

Methods: Sixty-three fetuses were evaluated with an estimated fetal weight <10th percentile who were classified as FGR or SGA based on the Delphi consensus protocol.
