The air medical team has limited options when evaluating the obstetrical patient and assessing fetal health during air transport to a high-risk obstetrical unit. Traditionally, physical examination and a Doppler stethoscope have been used to determine fetal heart rates and movement. However, with the advent of portable ultrasound technology, new information about the mother and child are available to the air medical crew. The Fetal Evaluation for Transport with Ultrasound (FETUS) is a screening examination that consists of an evaluation of the fetal heart rate, position, and movement and general condition of the placenta. The examination can be repeated in flight with no acoustic distortion from rotor noise. The additional information can be advantageous when transport decisions need to be made or when conditions do not allow Doppler stethoscope use.

Background: Early rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia (RSI) and tracheal intubation for patients with airway or ventilatory compromise following major trauma is recommended, with guidance suggesting a 45-min timeframe. Whilst on-scene RSI is recommended, the potential time benefit offered by Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) has not been studied. We compared the time from 999/112 emergency call to delivery of RSI between patients intubated either in the Emergency Department or pre-hospital by HEMS.

Using a unique dataset on the performance of soccer players in China (retrieved from 632 matches involving 24 teams during the 2014 to 2016 seasons), we investigate the effect of air pollution on different performance indicators that rely on different mixtures of the physical and cognitive inputs of players. To ensure a causal interpretation, we implement an instrumental variable (IV) approach using thermal inversion as the instrument for air pollution. We found that players' performance indicators, especially those more related to cognitive factors, are more strongly influenced by air pollution.

The dual role of calnexin on malignant progression and tumor microenvironment in glioma.

Sci Rep

December 2024

National Engineering Research Center for Miniaturized Detection Systems, College of Life Sciences, Northwest University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China.

Glioma is the most common malignant brain tumor. Previous studies have reported that calnexin (CANX) is significantly up-regulated in a variety of malignant tumors, including glioma, but its biological function and mechanism in glioma is still unclear. In this study, differentially expressed proteins in 3 primary glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tissues and 3 paracancer tissues were identified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-based proteomic and bioinformatic analysis.

Stress causes lipid droplet accumulation in chondrocytes by impairing microtubules.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage

Department of Oral Anatomy and Physiology and TMD, College of Stomatology, the Fourth Military Medical University. Xi'an, China; Shanghai Key Laboratory of Craniomaxillofacial Development and Diseases, Shanghai Stomatological Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Objective: Abnormal mechanical stress is intimately coupled with osteoarthritis (OA). Microtubules play a vital role in the regulation of mechanotransduction and intracellular transport. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of stress-induced microtubule impairment on intracellular transport and lipid droplet (LD) accumulation in chondrocytes.

Proliferative behaviours of CD90-expressing chondrocytes under the control of the TSC1-mTOR/PTHrP-nuclear localization segment pathway.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage

Objective: Some cells in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) cartilage undergo proliferation in response to negative pressure, which can be induced in vivo by creating bilateral anterior elevation (BAE). TMJ cartilage harbours CD90-expressing cells, and CD90 expression increases under certain controlled conditions. The parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) nuclear localization segment (NLS) promotes chondrocyte proliferation, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling plays a regulatory role in promoting PTHrP transcription.
