Three throat swab samples from infants and young children in Hubei Province were identified as positive for enteroviruses. All subjects were one month old, and the onset of symptoms occurred in June; these cases were sporadic and exhibited no clear epidemiological associations. The results of VP1 gene amplification analysis indicated that all three infant cases were attributed to Echovirus 30 (ECHO30).

Chemical characterization and evaluation of antiviral activity of two fucoidans extracted from Mediterranean brown seaweeds, Padina pavonica and Dictyopteris membranacea.

Lett Appl Microbiol

January 2025

Laboratory for Chemical, Galenic and Pharmacological Development of Drugs (LR12ES09), Faculty of Pharmacy of Monastir, University of Monastir, Monastir, BP 5000, Tunisia.

Brown seaweeds are known for their bioactive compounds, particularly sulfated polysaccharides such as fucoidans, which have demonstrated antiviral properties. However, limited studies have focused on the antiviral potential of fucoidans extracted from Mediterranean brown seaweeds. In this study, two brown seaweeds Padina pavonica and Dictyopteris membranacea (Fuc-Pad and Fuc-Dic, respectively) were collected from monastir coasts, Tunisia, and a specific extraction protocol was employed to obtain fucoidans.

Structural Elucidation and Antiviral Properties of Pannosides from the Halophyte L.

Mar Drugs

November 2024

College of Pharmacy, Yonsei Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Yonsei University, Incheon 21983, Republic of Korea.

Four previously undescribed pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins, pannosides F-I (-), were isolated from the halophyte L. (), and their chemical structures were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Comprehensive structural analysis revealed the presence of distinct aglycone and glycosidic moieties, along with complex acylation patterns.

Background: Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle most often caused by viral infections. Sex differences in the immune response during myocarditis have been well described but upstream mechanisms in the heart that might influence sex differences in disease are not completely understood.

Methods: Male and female BALB/c wild type mice received an intraperitoneal injection of heart-passaged coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) or vehicle control.
