When pollen lands on a receptive stigma, it germinates and extends a tube inside the transmitting tissue of the pistil to deliver the sperm cells for double fertilization. The growth of the pollen tube triggers significant alterations in its gene expression. The extent to which these changes occur in the vegetative cell or extend to the sperm cells transported by the tube is unclear but important to determine since sperm cells are believed to acquire a competency for fertilization during pollen-pistil interactions.

Women with disabilities face significant barriers in accessing maternal healthcare, which increases their risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, particularly in Africa, where resources are limited. Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a unique opportunity to improve inclusivity and accessibility to antenatal care, skilled birth attendance and postnatal care for these women. This paper explores the potential of AI to address the socio-economic, physical, and institutional barriers that limit the utilisation of maternal healthcare services by women with disabilities.

Effective research and clinical application in audiology and hearing loss (HL) require the integration of diverse data, yet the absence of a dedicated database impedes understanding and insight extraction in HL. To address this, the Genetic Deafness Commons (GDC) is developed by consolidating extensive genetic and genomic data from 51 public databases and the Chinese Deafness Genetics Consortium. This repository comprises 5 983 613 variants across 201 HL genes, revealing the genetic landscape of HL and identifying six novel mutational hotspots within the DNA-binding domains of transcription factors.

In an era where urban environments increasingly grapple with the challenges of an aging population, the necessity for age-friendly neighborhoods (AFNs) has never been more acute. This study investigates the implementation and effectiveness of AFN initiatives in Hong Kong, examining the alignment between policy intentions and their actual impact on the ground. Utilizing a strengths-based perspective, documentary and thematic analysis for gray literature, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups are employed to bridge existing research gaps by highlighting the subjective agency of older adults.
