A reasonable assumption is that incontinence would be relieved by increasing urethral resistance through stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in urethral smooth muscle. A review of available medical treatment of stress urinary incontinence is done. Alpha-receptor agonists are not in common use because of systemic side-effects. Estrogens do not seem to have beneficial effect on stress urinary incontinence. Currently, new molecules such as duloxetine, are uptake inhibitor of serotonin and noradrenaline could provide a noninvasive therapy for patients with urinary incontinence. Further studies to identify clinical applications are required.

This article discusses the study by Grubić Rotkvić on the mechanisms of action of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and heart failure (HF). T2DM and HF are highly comorbid, with a significantly increased prevalence of HF in patients with T2DM. SGLT2i exhibit potential in reducing hospitalization rates for HF and cardiovascular mortality through multiple mechanisms, including improving blood glucose control, promoting urinary sodium excretion, reducing sympathetic nervous system activity, lowering both preload and afterload on the heart, alleviating inflammation and oxidative stress, enhancing endothelial function, improving myocardial energy metabolism, and stabilizing cardiac ion homeostasis.

Background: When exposed to ambient light, parenteral nutrition (PN) contamination with peroxides almost doubles, which increases oxidative stress in preterm infants, contributing to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) recommends complete PN photoprotection to reduce peroxide contamination and optimize its integrity but acknowledges the challenges of its implementation. In this study, a novel photoprotection procedure was tested for its effectiveness in reducing peroxide load and limiting ascorbic acid degradation, and for its feasibility and effectiveness in reducing urinary peroxide levels in preterm infants.
