A new podand ligand has been designed and synthesized which reacts hydrothermally with either Nd(III) or Gd(III) nitrate forming an array of linked metallocycles with void spaces. Discrete dodecameric water clusters occupy the voids in the structures. The structure of the cluster can be described as an open-cube octamer buttressed on two sides by dimers to form the overall dodecamer. These clusters join different arrays of linked metallocycles.

To examine the water-induced photoluminescence turn-on and its potential application in trace water sensing, a new series of [Ln(dmba)(HO)]·2HO, where Ln = La (), Pr (), Nd (), Sm (), Eu (), Gd (), Tb (), Dy (), Ho (), and Er (), were synthesized using dimethoxybenzoic acid (Hdmba). Their single-crystal structures and thermal and chemical robustness were investigated, and the effects of lanthanide contraction and noncovalent interactions were discussed. The photoluminescence and colorimetric properties of - were investigated.

Lanthanides (Ln) from the f-blocks of the periodic table have gained significant interest due to their unique characteristics, including magnetism, photoluminescence, and catalysis. In this study, a series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks [Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu(III), Tb(III), Nd(III), Er(III), Ho(III), Gd(III), Pr(III), and Dy(III)] were constructed based on oxalic acid and lanthanide metals as the building blocks. These MOFs were comprehensively characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and Raman spectroscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Separating lanthanide elements from aqueous mixtures is difficult, but ion-selective capture using porous materials like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) shows promise.
  • Understanding the local coordination environment of lanthanides (Nd(III), Gd(III), Lu(III)) within specific MOFs (Cr-MIL-101, UiO-66, UiO-68) is essential for designing effective ion-selective MOFs.
  • Functionalizing MOFs with specific groups can enhance lanthanide capture by improving interactions at metal oxo cluster sites and enabling selective binding over metal sites.

Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and biological activities of complexes of light lanthanide ions with 3-hydroxyflavone.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

December 2024

Department of Polymer Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Rzeszow University of Technology, Al. Powstańców Warszawy 6, 35-959 Rzeszów, Poland.

New solid compounds of light lanthanide ions with 3-hydroxyflavone were synthesized in good yields (up to 85 %). The resulting complexes have been thoroughly characterized using various analytical and spectral techniques, including elemental analysis, complexometry, thermogravimetry, UV-VIS, FT-IR, H NMR, AgNPET LDI MS and fluorescence spectroscopy. The molecular formulas of the complexes were determined as follows: Ln(3HF), where 3HF-3-hydroxyflavone, Ln = La(III), Pr(III), Nd(III) and Ln(3HF)·nHO, where n = 1 for Ln = Ce(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), and n = 2 for Gd(III).

To study the relationship between polymorphism and catalytic activities of lanthanide coordination polymers in the cycloaddition reactions of CO with epoxides, the monoclinic and triclinic polymorphs of [Ln(NH-Glu)(ox)]·2HO, where Ln = La (), Pr (), Nd (), Sm ), Eu (), Gd (), Tb (), and Dy (), NH-Glu = NH containing glutamate, and ox = oxalate, were synthesized and characterized. Factors determining polymorphic preference, the discrepancy between the two polymorphic framework structures, potential acidic and basic sites, thermal and chemical stabilities, active surface areas, void volumes, CO sorption/desorption isotherms, and temperature-programmed desorption of NH and CO are comparatively presented. Based on the cycloaddition of CO with epichlorohydrin in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide under solvent-free conditions and ambient pressure, catalytic activities of the two polymorphs were evaluated, and the relationship between polymorphism and catalytic performances has been established.
