alpha CP-4 is an RNA-binding protein coded by PCBP4, a gene mapped to 3p21, a common deleted region in lung cancer. In this study we characterized the expression of alpha CP-4 and alpha CP-4a, an alternatively spliced variant of alpha CP-4, in lung cancer cell lines and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples from early stage lung cancer patients. In NSCLC biopsies, an immunocytochemical analysis showed cytoplasmic expression of alpha CP-4 and alpha CP-4a in normal lung bronchiolar epithelium. In contrast, alpha CP-4 immunoreactivity was not found in 47% adenocarcinomas and 83% squamous cell carcinomas, whereas all of the tumors expressed alpha CP-4a. Besides, lack of alpha CP-4 expression was associated with high proliferation of the tumor (determined by Ki67 expression). By fluorescence in situ hybridization, >30% of NSCLC cell lines and tumors showed allelic losses at PCBP4, correlating with the absence of the protein. On the other hand, no mutations in the coding region of the gene were found in any of the 24 cell lines analyzed. By Northern blotting and real-time reverse transcription-PCR, we detected the expression of alpha CP-4 and alpha CP-4a messages in NSCLC and small cell lung cancer cell lines. Our data demonstrate an abnormal expression of alpha CP-4 in lung cancer, possibly associated with an altered processing of the alpha CP-4 mRNA leading to a predominant expression of alpha CP-4a. This may be considered as an example of alternative splicing involved in tumor suppressor gene inactivation. Finally, induction of alpha CP-4 expression reduced cell growth, in agreement with its proposed role as a tumor suppressor, and suggesting an association of this RNA-binding protein with lung carcinogenesis.

Plants continue to constitute key elements of medical practice in West African countries. The Cabo Verde archipelago hosts a great diversity of medicinal plants and local markets are considered important sites for trading plants harvested by rural communities. Transformation of chloro-organic compounds by nFe(0) has been studied extensively, but limited study exists on the transformation and fate of nFe(0) during the dechlorination of chloro-organics even though such knowledge is important in predicting its surface chemistry, particularly, toxicity in the environment. In this study, the nFe(0) core became hollowed, collapsed and gradually corroded into poorly crystallized ferrihydrite (FeO(OH)) at the pristine reaction time, which later gave rise to lath-like lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), acicular goethite (α-FeOOH) and cubic magnetite (FeO) by the end of the reaction time (120 min). Also, dechlorination of 2,4-DCP into 2-CP, 4-CP and phenol was achieved within 120 min.

In this work, the magnetic amino-functionalized microporous organic network composites (FeO@MON-NH) were rational designed and facile synthesized for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), followed by their analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography. The incorporation of amino groups (hydrogen bonding sites) into hydrophobic MON-NH networks led to their good enrichment for four typical EDCs bisphenol A (BPA), 4-alpha-cumylphenol (4-α-CP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) relying on the pre-designed hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions. The combination of MON-NH shell and magnetic FeO core provided a fast extraction of BPA, 4-α-CP, 4-t-OP and 4-NP from matrix solution.

Polysaccharide with the enhanced immunostimulatory activities including intestinal immune system modulation was fractionated from Korean red ginseng (KRG) and its characteristics were investigated in the present experiment. When the water extracts were digested with α-amylase and amyloglucosidase and precipitated by ethanol to enhance immunostimulatory activity, enzyme digested-crude polysaccharides enhanced the macrophage and intestinal immune system via Peyer's patches compared to non-enzymatic crude polysaccharides. Starch-like polysaccharide also potently decreased in enzyme digested-crude polysaccharides.
