Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the retention on two or four implants of eight resilient and nonresilient retentive anchors used in overdentures.

Method And Materials: Eight groups of retentive anchors were used: Dyna and Shiner (magnets); Dalla Bona and O-Ring (balls); Ceka Revax and Zaag attachments (studs); the cast bar (Dolder type) system with plastic clips; and the milled bars system. These specimens with their respective overdentures were prepared on two similar acrylic resin models with four implants (3.75 x 13 mm). Ten tensile strength tests (Instron) were performed on each group at a speed of 3 mm per minute. The statistical analysis (one-way analysis of variance, Tukey's HSD test) was considered significant.

Results: The pull force values ranged between 0.400 and 3.800 daN (International System of Units). There was a significant difference in retention in favor of the milled bars in comparison with the Ceka Revax, Hader bars, Zaag attachments, O-Ring, and Dyna groups, and a marginally significant difference compared with the Dalla Bona group. There was a highly significant difference with the Shiner magnets.

Conclusion: The milled bar system was the most retentive anchor, with the Dalla Bona, Ceka Revax, Hader Bar, Zaag attachment, and O-Ring groups being the second most retentive. The least retentive groups were the Shiner and Dyna magnets. Proper abutment placement in the mandible and the correct selection of the retentive anchor will improve overdenture retention.

The sp Hybridization of Tin Single Atoms for Dendrite-Free Sodium Metal Batteries.

Adv Mater

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 457 Zhongshan Road, Dalian, 116023, China.

Restricting the growth of sodium (Na) dendrites at the atomic level is the premise to enable both the stability and safety of sodium metal batteries (SMBs). Here, the universal synthesis of the fourth main group element (Sn, Ge, Pb) as single metal atoms anchored on graphene (Sn, Ge, Pb SAs/G) with sp hybridization for dendrite-free sodium metal anode is reported. The in situ real-time observation of Na growth on Sn SAs/G uncoils a kinetically uniform planar deposition at the atomic level for substantially suppressing the dendrite growth.

Multi-omics approach reveals TGF-β signaling-driven senescence in periodontium stem cells.

J Adv Res

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Center for Stomatology, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Department of Head and Neck Oncology, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: The periodontal ligament (PDL), a dynamic connective tissue that anchors teeth to the alveolar bone, enables tooth retention and facilitates continuous turnover. The integrity of the periodontium is maintained by periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), whose dysfunction and senescence with age can disrupt tissue homeostasis, hinder injury repair, and lead to tooth loss, ultimately impacting overall health. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is known for its regenerative properties and as a functional paracrine factor in stem cell therapy, but its precise role in modulating PDLSC activity remains controversial and poorly understood.

Aims: It is unclear if a supportive bandage, removable splint, or walking cast offers the best outcome following low-risk ankle fractures in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial to compare these treatments.

Methods: Children aged five to 15 years with low-risk ankle fractures were recruited to this feasibility trial from 1 February 2020 to 30 March 2023.

Oral Lactoferrin-Responsive Formulation Anchoring around Inflammatory Bowel Region for IBD Therapy.

Adv Healthc Mater

December 2024

Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Medical School of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710061, China.

Oral formulation is the ideal treatment method for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) therapy, but the mucosal damage and diarrhea symptoms impede the drug retention around the inflammatory region, severely limiting IBD therapeutic efficacy. To address this, an oral astaxanthin (Ast) precise delivery formulation is developed with the selective Ast anchoring around the inflammatory region by the novel lactoferrin (LF)-responsive flocculation. This formulation also heightens the apparent solubility of Ast with the minimized edible safety risks for the edible raw materials.

Cholesterol (Cho) is commonly used to stabilize nanoliposomes; however, there is controversy on the relationship between Cho and health. In this study, we developed a novel multifunctional nanoliposome utilizing structurally similar sitogluside (SG) and dioscin (Dio) instead of Cho to anchor the phospholipid bilayer and synergistically modulate the membrane properties of the nanoliposome (DPPC or DOPC). The storage and gastrointestinal tract stability experiment demonstrated that the changes of physical and chemical properties, including the significantly reduced size and Dio retention rate of nanoliposomes synergistically modulated by SG and Dio compared to those of SG alone, regulated nanoliposomes.
