Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated by thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH) is rare. We present a case of a female patient with SLE who developed TMA and NCPH and responded positively to rituximab and plasma exchange treatment.
Case Description: A 53-year-old woman was admitted with 6 h of confusion.

Early recognition of acute kidney injury is essential to prevent progression to chronic kidney disease. We present the case of a 19-year-old man with multiple emergency department visits for fatigue, abdominal pain, and intermittent dark urine. Upon admission, he had pancytopenia with elements suggestive of hemolysis and acute kidney injury.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA variety of autoimmune disorders are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis. Previous studies have suggested combined therapy of heparin and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) with fresh frozen plasma (FFP) as the replacement fluid is beneficial in some cases of acute flare-up of autoimmune diseases complicated by thrombotic events. Nevertheless, it remains unknown whether clinicians do more harm than good by exposing patients to a "thrombotic storm" through simultaneous administration of heparin and the clotting factors in the FFP during TPE.

Background: As a group of more than 3.67 million people, the bone health of Chinese plasmapheresis donors, which the main population is also a risk group of osteoporosis (OP), has raised concerns. Therefore, this article investigates the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD), bone metabolism indicators, and plasmapheresis donation behavior among some high-risk plasmapheresis donors for OP in China, and further explores the mediating factors through reasonable statistical methods.

Background: Intravascular hemolysis is a known complication of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Characterized by elevated plasma-free hemoglobin (PFH), intravascular hemolysis is associated with cytotoxic effects leading to renal replacement therapy (RRT), longer ECMO runs, and mortality. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) in tandem with ECMO was described as a therapy for various pathologic conditions, but there are no Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) guidelines for the treatment of ECMO-induced hemolysis.
