Detection of selected vector-borne pathogens in domestic animals, ectoparasites, and their owners in a rural community in Southwest Guatemala.

Vet Parasitol Reg Stud Reports

January 2025

Center for Companion Animal Studies, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523, USA.

Vector-borne pathogens, which are transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods to animals and people, are common in tropical regions where, combined with economic factors, can cause significant public health burden. A community-level study was undertaken in southwestern Guatemala to assess the presence of vector-borne pathogens in blood samples from humans (n = 98), their animals (n = 90), and ectoparasites (n = 83) over a period of 2 weeks. Human capillary blood was collected from participant's index finger, and animal venous blood (chickens, pigs, dogs, and cats) was collected from the jugular or cephalic veins at the enrollment period of a concurrent study.

Introduction: Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPAC) is a rare malignant tumour of the sweat glands, usually in the digits. It has a high rate of recurrence and metastasis, yet there's a lack of guidelines for its diagnosis and management. Therefore, this report aims to evaluate procedures that provide the best outcomes, which will help create a consensus for its management.

Introduction: To interact with the environment, it is crucial to distinguish between sensory information that is externally generated and inputs that are self-generated. The sensory consequences of one's own movements tend to induce attenuated behavioral- and neural responses compared to externally generated inputs. We propose a computational model of sensory attenuation (SA) based on Bayesian Causal Inference, where SA occurs when an internal cause for sensory information is inferred.

MicroRNA122 (miR-122) is a microRNA that is highly expressed in hepatocytes and has been identified as a prospective therapeutic target and biomarker for liver injury. An expanding body of research has demonstrated that miR-122 is a critical regulator in both the initiation and progression of a wide range of liver diseases. Traditional methods for detecting miR-122 mainly include Northern blotting and qRT-PCR, but they are technically complex and cumbersome, requiring expensive instruments and high technical requirements.

Background: Zinc finger proteins (ZNFs) have been proved to play important roles in driving the progression of breast cancer (BC), one of the most common cancers among women. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of zinc-finger SWIM domain-containing protein 3 () in promoting BC cell progression by regulating lipid metabolism.

Methods: Differential expression of in BC was confirmed by comparing its expression in normal human mammary epithelial cells and BC cells.
