Purpose: Given the evolving literature regarding the optimal surgical approach to mitigate post-operative recurrence of Crohn's disease (CD), this survey study aimed to elucidate the practices and preferences of colorectal surgeons in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) in their surgical management of CD.
Methods: Colorectal surgical consultants and fellows (n = 337) registered with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) were invited by email in April 2022 to participate in a cross-sectional survey consisting of basic demographics and 12 questions relating to their usual surgical practice and preferred operative strategy.
Results: A total of 135 responses were received (39.

Background: Tubular injury triggered by hyperglycemia is an important pathological characteristic in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Accumulated advanced glycation end products and their precursor methylglyoxal (MGO), contribute to the development of DN. Carnosine has been shown to prevent the development of DN but the underlying mechanism still needs to be studied in depth.

Background: Glial cells exhibit distinct transcriptional responses to β-amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). While sophisticated single-cell based methods have revealed heterogeneous glial subpopulations in the human AD brain, the histological localization of these multicellular responses to AD pathology has not been fully characterized due to the loss of spatial information. Here, we combined spatial transcriptomics (ST) with immunohistochemistry to explore the molecular mechanisms in the neuritic plaque niche.

Background: Condensed extracellular matrix structures called perineuronal nets (PNNs) preferentially enwrap the soma and stabilize proximal synapses of parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons in the cortex, serving as a protective barrier against neurotoxins. While PNN structural integrity declines in the healthy aging brain, this reduction is exacerbated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the 5xFAD mouse model of amyloidosis, the elimination of microglia prevents reductions in PNN, suggesting microglia are responsible for the over-degradation of PNNs observed in AD.

Background: Glycosylation is the most common post-translational modification in the brain. Aberrant glycosylation patterns are present in cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue from Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Specifically, dysregulation of a particular form of terminal glycoconjugate modification, sialylation, has been identified in AD.
