Ischemic stroke mostly affects the primary motor cortex and descending motor fibres, with consequent motor impairment. Pre-clinical models of stroke with reproducible and long-lasting sensorimotor deficits in higher-order animals are lacking. We describe a new method to induce focal brain damage targeting the motor cortex to study damage to the descending motor tracts in the non-human primate.

Objective: The authors sought to perform a preliminary assessment of the safety and effectiveness of stereotactic laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) for patients with cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM)-related epilepsy.

Methods: The authors retrospectively analyzed 6 patients with CCM-related epilepsy who underwent LITT. Pre-, intra-, and postoperative brain MRI studies were used to characterize preoperative CCM volume, ablation volume, and postablation hemosiderin volume.

Epileptic seizures associated with hyperglycemia have a rare but characteristic MR imaging pattern which however is frequently missed. It consists of a T2 hypointensity and an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) decrease of the white matter underlying the epileptic cortex; the cortex itself may be DWI hyperintense and show a blood-brain barrier disruption. Prompt diagnosis is relevant since treatment of the hyperglycemic state rather than treatment with anti-epileptic drugs frequently interrupts the seizures.

The decline of voluntary bulbar functions such as speech and swallowing are among the clinical manifestations of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) influencing a worst prognosis. Differential diagnosis between the contribution of upper motor neuron (UMN) and lower motor neuron degeneration to the bulbar impairment is often hard. Thinning and T2* hypointensity of the primary motor cortex have been recently suggested as possible MRI markers of UMN impairment in ALS patients, but little research has purposely targeted the orofacial region of the primary motor cortex (fM1).
