We investigated the photoperiodic response of serotonin- and galanin (GA)- immunoreactive (ir) cells in the paraventricular organ (PVO) and infundibular nucleus (IF) of the Japanese quail and the interaction of these cells with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-ir neurons in the hypothalamus. Serotonin-ir cells were located in series from the PVO to the IF, and were connected with each other. The number of serotonin-ir cells differed significantly between light and dark phases on the short days (SD), but did not differ between light and dark phases on long days (LD). GA-ir cells were also found in the PVO and IF. The number of GA-ir cells under SD conditions was significantly greater than under LD conditions but did not change diurnally. Both serotonin-ir and GA-ir fibers ran along the GnRH-ir cells in the nucleus commissurae pallii. Serotonin-ir and GA-ir fibers were connected with the GnRH-ir fibers in the external layer of the median eminence (ME). We confirmed that GA-ir fibers were closely associated with serotonin-ir neurons in the PVO and IF. GA-ir neurons have at least 2 routes of regulating GnRH neurons directly, and indirectly via the serotonin-ir cells in the PVO and IF.

A subset of gustatory cells are serotonin immunoreactive (ir) in the mammalian taste bud. In the taste bud of lamprey, elongated gustatory-like cells are also serotonin-ir. In contrast, flattened serotonin-ir cells are located only in the basal region of the taste buds in the teleosts and amphibians.

Background And Aim: The largest source of melatonin, according to animal studies, is the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but this is not yet thoroughly characterized in humans. This study aims to map the expression of melatonin and its two receptors in human GI tract and pancreas using microarray analysis and immunohistochemistry.
Method: Gene expression data from normal intestine and pancreas and inflamed colon tissue due to ulcerative colitis were analyzed for expression of enzymes relevant for serotonin and melatonin production and their receptors.

The present study was conducted to clarify the regional distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells secreting serotonin, substance P (SP), cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and neurotensin in the small and large intestine of the mole-rats (Spalax leucodon), by specific immunohistochemical methods. In the small and large intestine of mole-rats (Spalax leucodon), serotonin, SP and VIP were identified with various frequencies, but CCK-8 and neurotensin were not observed. Most of the IR cells in the small and large intestine were located in the intestinal crypt and epithelium however, they were more frequency in the intestinal crypt.

Substance P (SP), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and serotonin inputs onto laryngeal motoneurons (LMNs) are known to exist, but the distribution of their terminals in the caudal nucleus ambiguus (NA), remains unclear. Using immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy, we assessed simultaneously the distribution of SP, TH, serotonin and synaptophysin immunoreactive (ir) terminals in the caudal NA. SP, TH and serotonin-ir varicosities were considered to represent immunoreactive synapses if, using confocal microscopy, they were co-localized with the presynaptic protein, synaptophysin.
