HtpB, the chaperonin of the bacterial pathogen , is found in extracellular locations, even the cytoplasm of host cells. Although chaperonins have an essential cytoplasmic function in protein folding, HtpB exits the cytoplasm to perform extracellular virulence-related functions that support 's lifestyle. The mechanism by which HtpB reaches extracellular locations is not currently understood.

Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel 1 (VDAC1) is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein that plays a crucial role in regulating cellular energy metabolism and apoptosis by mediating the exchange of ions and metabolites between mitochondria and the cytosol. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are central features of neurodegenerative diseases. The pivotal functions of VDAC1 in controlling mitochondrial membrane permeability, regulating calcium balance, and facilitating programmed cell death pathways, position it as a key determinant in the delicate balance between neuronal viability and degeneration.

This study investigated the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and the involvement of nuclear estrogen receptors (ESR) on testicular energy metabolism and spermatogenesis in zebrafish. Testes were incubated with DMSO, 10 pM or 10μM BPA for 6 or 72h, with some samples pre-incubated with the ESRα/β antagonist ICI 182,780. Gene and protein expressions were analyzed using real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively.

Unlabelled: Gram-negative bacteria play a pivotal role in the bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Because the outer membrane (OM) of these bacteria hinders the direct permeation of hydrophobic substances into the cells, trans-OM proteins are required for the uptake of PAHs. However, neither the characteristics of PAH transporters nor the specific transport mechanism has been well interpreted.

Hemodialysis (HD) is a critical treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The effectiveness of conventional dialyzers used there could be compromised during extended use due to limited blood compatibility of synthetic polymeric membranes and sub-optimal dialyzer design. In fact, blood flow in the hollow fiber (HF) membrane could trigger inflammatory responses and thrombus formation, leading to reduced filtration efficiency and limiting therapy duration, a consequence of flowing the patients' blood through the lumen of each fiber while the dialysate passes along the inter-fiber space (IOF, inside-out filtration).
