Thirty-two patients on hemodialysis for chronic renal failure were investigated. A correlation was sought between bone marrow iron stores assessed on Prussian-blue stained smears, and some common hematological parameters such as red blood corpuscle indexes obtained by coulter counter, serum iron, iron-binding capacity and serum ferritin levels (measured by RIA). MCH and MCV were both found significantly depressed in patients with depleted iron stores, a situation not reflected by any of the other tested parameters. These results reveal a practical and simple guideline for the treating practitioner who wants to initiate iron supplementation or withdrawal in these patients especially in areas where more elaborate tests may not be at hand.

Repeated use of nitroglycerin results in a loss of its vasodilatory efficacy which limits its clinical use for the treatment of angina pectoris. This tolerance phenomenon is a defining characteristic of all compounds classified as nitrodilators, which includes NTG as well as S-nitrosothiols and dinitrosyl iron complexes. These compounds vasodilate via activation of soluble guanylate cyclase, although they do not release requisite amounts of free nitric oxide (NO) and some do not even cross the plasma membrane.

Genetic deletion of genes that ultimately restrict Ang II formation has been shown to result in marked anemia in mice. In this study, adult mice with a genetic deletion of the RAS precursor protein angiotensinogen (Agt-KO) were used.

Background/objectives: Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional iron-binding protein, has considerable potential for use as an active ingredient in food supplements due to its numerous positive effects on health. As Lf is prone to degradation, we aimed to develop a formulation that would ensure sufficient stability of Lf in the gastrointestinal tract and during product storage.
Methods: A simple, efficient, and well-established technology that has potential for industrial production was used for the double-coating of neutral pellet cores with an Lf layer and a protective enteric coating.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of dietary iron (Fe) levels on the production performance, nutrient digestibility, blood biochemistry, and meat and fur quality of growing Rex rabbits. Two hundred 3-month-old Rex rabbits were randomly allocated to five groups, each with forty replicates. Rabbits were fed a basal diet supplemented with varying levels of Fe (0, 20, 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg) in the form of ferrous sulfate monohydrate.

We aimed to study the accuracy of common iron biomarkers compared with bone marrow iron staining in a large retrospective dataset of hematological patients. We collected from 6610 patients (median age 66 years) results of iron staining, with their concurrent ferritin, transferrin saturation, soluble transferrin receptor, transferrin, hemoglobin, and mean red blood cell volume results from Helsinki University Hospital electronic health records.
