Health care quality falls far short of its potential nationally. Because care is delivered locally, improvement strategies should be tailored to community needs. This analysis from the Community Quality Index (CQI) study reports on a comprehensive examination of how effectively care is delivered in twelve metropolitan areas. We find room for improvement in quality overall and in dimensions of preventive, acute, and chronic care in all of these communities; no community was consistently best or worst on the various dimensions. Having concrete estimates of the extent of the gap in performance should stimulate community-based quality improvement efforts.

Most antibiotics administered via intermittent IV infusion are diluted in 50 to 100 ml of diluent. The primary infusion set for the BD Alaris pumps can hold 25 ml of volume in its tubing, potentially contributing up to a 50% drug loss if residual volume is present after administration is complete. In the case of antibiotics, this may lead to significant underdosing, potentially contributing to reduced therapeutic response and emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

This paper describes the CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) process of collecting and analyzing field level qualitative data in an ongoing cycle. This data can be used to guide decision-making for effective emergency response. When medical and community components are integrated from the earliest stages of the disaster, it allows for true collaboration and supports the CQI process to be responsive to evolving data.

Background: Lack of care coordination between Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and hospitals contributes to delay of acute stroke (AS) treatment. In the United States, states have adopted laws to improve the quality of EMS and hospital care; the degree to which these laws create regulatory incentives to promote care coordination between them is less well known. We examined state variation in attributes of laws that may influence AS care coordination between EMS and hospitals.

Introduction: Rural physician engagement in continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities is vital to improving quality of care, patient safety, and healthcare delivery efficiencies. However, there is a lack of evidence surrounding the barriers and facilitators to CQI uptake across rural medical practices. This study aimed to explore enablers and barriers to CQI implementation and identify ways to foster greater engagement of rural physicians.

Purpose: Carbohydrate intake has been linked to colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, with variations depending on the quantity and quality of carbohydrates consumed. This study aimed to investigate the association between carbohydrate quantity and quality, using the low-carbohydrate diet score (LCD) and carbohydrate quality index (CQI), and the risk of CRC in the Chinese population.
Methods: We conducted a case-control study in Guangzhou, China, with 2,799 CRC cases and an equal number of sex- and age-matched controls.
