Treponema denticola and its major outer sheath protein (Msp) induce actin reorganization in fibroblasts. We adapted a barbed-end labeling/imaging assay to monitor Msp-induced subcortical actin filament assembly in neutrophils and fibroblasts. Msp, at an actin-reorganizing concentration, inhibited migration of these dissimilar cell types, whose cytoskeletal functions in locomotion and phagocytosis are crucial for immunity and healing of peripheral infections.

Platelets are critical mediators of hemostasis and thrombosis. Platelets circulate as discs in their resting form but change shape rapidly upon activation by vascular damage and/or soluble agonists such as thrombin. Platelet shape change is driven by a dynamic remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton.

The Subcortical Maternal Complex (SCMC) is composed of maternally encoded proteins required for the early stages of embryo development. Here we aimed to investigate the expression profile of the genes that encode the individual members of the SCMC in human reproductive failures. To accomplish that, we selected three datasets in the Gene Expression Omnibus repository for differential gene expression (DGE) analysis, comprising human endometrial and placental tissues of patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).

Background: Immature cumulus-oocyte complexes are retrieved to obtain mature oocytes by in vitro maturation (IVM), a laboratory tool in reproductive medicine to obtain mature oocytes. Unfortunately, the efficiency of IVM is not satisfactory. To circumvent this problem, we therefore intended to commence with the composition of ovarian follicular fluid (FF), an important microenvironment influencing oocyte growth.

During select pathological conditions, the heart can hypertrophy and remodel in either a dilated or concentric ventricular geometry, which is associated with lengthening or widening of cardiomyocytes, respectively. The mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1 (MEK1) and extracellular signal-related kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) pathway has been implicated in these differential types of growth such that cardiac overexpression of activated MEK1 causes profound concentric hypertrophy and cardiomyocyte thickening, while genetic ablation of the genes encoding ERK1/2 in the mouse heart causes dilation and cardiomyocyte lengthening. However, the mechanisms by which this kinase signaling pathway controls cardiomyocyte directional growth as well as its downstream effectors are poorly understood.
