The repair of common bile duct injuries is a challenge even when performed by experienced surgeons. Bile duct defects are normally repaired by biliodigestive or biliobiliary anastomoses but several experimental studies have been conducted with the aim of understanding whether or not synthetic prosthetic materials can be used. Although there are few experimental studies on the use of autogenous grafts, most of the international literature would appear to be more interested in the use of synthetic materials. The authors report their experience with non-iatrogenic common hepatic duct injuries that, due to technical difficulties, were repaired by means of a pioneering technique, namely the Gore-Tex vascular graft.
