The distribution and bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants are essential to understanding their toxicological mechanism. However, achieving spatial resolution at the subtissue level is still challenging. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent environmental pollutant with widespread occurrence.

Background: Left atrial dissection is a rare and occasionally fatal complication of cardiac surgery and is defined as the creation of a false chamber through a tear in the mitral valve annulus extending into the left atrial wall. Some patients are asymptomatic, while others present with various symptoms, such as chest pain, dyspnea, and even cardiac arrest. Although there is no established management for left atrial dissection, surgery should be considered in patients with hemodynamic disruption.

The thymus, a vital immune organ in humans, plays a crucial role in the differentiation and development of T cells. Its normal development commences around the fourth week of gestation, originating from the ectoderm of the third branchial cleft and the endoderm of the third parotid pouch. By the 7-8th week of gestation, the primary thymus migrates towards the central axis.

Pericardial edema - fluid accumulation within the pericardium - is a frequently observed malformation in zebrafish embryo-based chemical toxicity screens. We recently discovered that the severity of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP)-induced pericardial edema was dependent on the ionic strength of exposure media. TPHP is an aryl phosphate ester (APE) widely used as a plasticizer and flame retardant.

The heart integrates diverse cell lineages into a functional unit, including the pericardium, a mesothelial sac that supports heart movement, homeostasis, and immune responses. However, despite its critical roles, the developmental origins of the pericardium remain uncertain due to disparate models. Here, using live imaging, lineage tracking, and single-cell transcriptomics in zebrafish, we find the pericardium forms within the lateral plate mesoderm from dedicated anterior mesothelial progenitors and distinct from the classic heart field.
