Sexual relationships, secondary syringe exchange, and gender differences in HIV risk among drug injectors.

Injection drug use continues to place women at risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through both risky injecting practices and risky sexual behavior with male injection drug users (IDUs). Although attendance at syringe-exchange programs (SEPs) is protective against HIV, a recent study found that women attending SEPs who exchanged syringes for other people (secondary exchange) were at greater risk for HIV seroconversion, potentially through risky sexual behavior. We examined this question in a sample of 531 IDUs (175 women and 356 men) attending 23 SEPs in California in 2001. Findings indicated that women were more likely than men to engage in secondary exchange and were more likely to have IDU sexual partners. In multivariate analysis among women, secondary exchange was independently associated with distributive syringe sharing, not engaging in receptive sharing, and not exchanging sex for money or drugs. Multivariate analysis among men found that having an IDU sexual partner was associated with secondary exchange. Women's sexual risk behavior was not associated with secondary exchange, and although women's secondary exchange was associated with individual protection for injection-related behaviors, it may increase network risk. More information on network members is needed to understand gender differences in secondary exchange.

In this study, employing a simple anion exchange strategy and straightforward three-step synthetic route, a pair of promising nitrogen-rich heterocyclic cation and oxygen-rich anion were assembled together to generate two novel dinitramide energetic salts, both of which exhibit prominent detonation performance comparable to benchmark explosive RDX while possessing significantly lower mechanical sensitivity than RDX, thereby highlighting them as promising candidates for advanced secondary explosives. This work has directly led to a practical protocol for the design of chloride-free environmentally friendly IEMs, and accelerates the development of organic explosives with high-energy and low-sensitivity.

Immunomodulatory effect of efferocytosis at the maternal-fetal interface.

Efferocytosis is a mechanism by which phagocytes efficiently clear apoptotic cells, averting their secondary necrosis and the subsequent release of potentially immunogenic or cytotoxic substances that can trigger strong immune and inflammatory responses. During efferocytosis, the metabolic pathways of phagocytes are transformed, which, along with the catabolism of apoptotic cargo, can affect their function and inflammatory state. Extensive apoptosis occurs during placental development, and some studies reported the immunomodulatory effects of efferocytosis at the maternal-fetal interface.

Salt stress is an important factor affecting the growth and development of rice, and prohexadione calcium (Pro-Ca) plays an important role in alleviating rice salt stress and improving rice yield. However, there are few studies on how Pro-Ca improves rice yield under salt stress by regulating the source-sink metabolism. In this study, we used Guanghong 3 (salt-tolerant variety) and Huanghuazhan (salt-sensitive variety) as experimental materials to investigate the dynamic changes in the synthesis and partitioning of nonstructural carbohydrates among source-sink, the dynamic changes in related enzyme activities, the effects of the source-sink metabolism on yield in rice under salt stress and the effect of Pro-Ca during the filling period.

We describe a novel experimental device, the VaMa (Vatavuk and Marić) artificial intraocular lens (IOL) capsule, and a method that enables all IOL types to be implanted in the bag. We present the application of the device and the procedure in patients with aphakia and native capsule damage and without efficient capsular support. The VaMa device and the method facilitate IOL exchange due to refractive errors and, in the case of their invention, the implementation of superior IOLs in the future.
