The neurotrophic protein brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a pivotal role in brain function and is affected by acute and chronic stress. We here investigate the patterns of BDNF and cortisol stress reactivity and recovery under the standardized stress protocol of the TSST and the effect of perceived chronic stress on the basal BDNF levels in healthy young men. Twenty-nine lean young men underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and a resting condition.

Spatial learning, memory, and reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical system (HPA axis) were studied in adult male rats, whose mothers during pregnancy were subjected to acute moderate normobaric hypoxia, or repeated injections of buspirone, an agonist of type 1A serotonergic receptors (5HT1A), or their combination. Prenatal treatment with buspirone in rats with prenatal hypoxia impaired learning ability during the first day of 5-day training. A decrease in the effectiveness of long-term memory in comparison with short-term memory was revealed in two groups of rats: prenatal treatment with buspirone in combination with hypoxia and injection of physiological saline without hypoxia.

Considerable attention is paid to the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the body response to stressful influences, but there are still many blank spots in understanding the details. ISIAH rats model the stress-sensitive form of arterial hypertension.

Infants' hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis responses to acute stressors are theorized to be shaped by parents' sensitive responsiveness to infants' cues. The strength and direction of the association between maternal sensitivity and infants' HPA responses may depend on the context in which maternal sensitivity is observed and on broader environmental sources of stress and support. In this preregistered study, we used data from 105 mothers and their 7-month-old infants to examine whether two empirically identified forms of contextual stress-poor maternal psychosocial wellbeing and family socioeconomic hardship-moderate the association between maternal sensitivity and infants' cortisol responses to the Still-Face Paradigm (SFP).
