Cingulate cortex (CC) processing of phasic pain starts in caudal parts. This is evidenced by electrical brain source analysis (BESA(R)) and current reconstruction imaging (CURRY(R)) which identify the activated neuronal assemblies in the individual brain morphology, including the boundary element method for volume current calculation. Data were obtained from 30 subjects who experienced, in repeated sessions, infrared laser stimuli applied on temple, hand, and foot, or electrical shocks applied intracutaneously on finger tip. CC activity started around 230 ms (+/-20 ms; inter-subject SD.) and was localized in mid or posterior CC, in general in Brodmann's area 23 (intra-subject SD <5 mm; inter-subject SD <15 mm), independent of the kind and body site of noxious stimulation.

Lymphatic muscle cells (LMCs) within the wall of collecting lymphatic vessels exhibit tonic and autonomous phasic contractions, which drive active lymph transport to maintain tissue-fluid homeostasis and support immune surveillance. Damage to LMCs disrupts lymphatic function and is related to various diseases. Despite their importance, knowledge of the gene transcriptional signatures in LMCs and how they relate to lymphatic function in normal and disease contexts is largely missing.

Alteration of responses to salient stimuli occurs in a wide range of brain disorders and may be rooted in pathophysiological brain state dynamics. Specifically, tonic and phasic modes of activity in the reticular activating system (RAS) influence, and are influenced by, salient stimuli, respectively. The RAS influences the spectral characteristics of activity in the neocortex, shifting the balance between low- and high-frequency fluctuations.

Introduction: Over half of patients who spend >48 hours in the intensive care unit (ICU) are fed via a nasogastric (NG) tube. Current guidance recommends continuous delivery of feed throughout the day and night. Emerging evidence from healthy human studies shows that NG feeding in an intermittent pattern (rather than continuous) promotes phasic hormonal, digestive and metabolic responses that are important for effective nutrition.
