We examined the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity and antihypertensive effect of the hot water extract of wakame, Undaria pinnatifida. Ten dipeptides were isolated from the extract by several steps of chromatography, and their amino acid sequences were Tyr-His, Lys-Trp, Lys-Tyr, Lys-Phe, Phe-Tyr, Val-Trp, Val-Phe, Ile-Tyr, Ile-Trp, and Val-Tyr. Both single administration and repeated oral administration of synthetic Tyr-His, Lys-Tyr, Phe-Tyr, and Ile-Tyr significantly decreased blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Neurodegenerative pathologies such as age-related macular degeneration currently have no cure or effective treatment. In this type of disease, the presence of amyloid-β peptides, oxidative stress, and inflammation trigger dysregulation of retinal pigment epithelial cells and progression toward the death of these cells, resulting in a loss of vision. The production of amyloid-β peptides, oxidative stress, and inflammation can be triggered in response to viral infections.

This work explores the synergies between N-rich (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) and N-deficient (Undaria pinnatifida) macroalgae for the production of N-containing hydrochar and solid biofuels via co-hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC). The impact of the feedstock (each alga alone and all possible binary mixtures) was comprehensively assessed under different temperatures (180-260 °C) and times (60-240 min). The synergies between micro and macroalgae governed product distribution, nitrogen transformation pathways, and hydrochar quality, with these effects varying by processing conditions.

Sea mustard () is a brown macroalga extensively cultivated and consumed in South Korea. However, the high volume of seaweed production in the country results in substantial waste generation.
