Update on identification of pathogenic crystals in joint fluid.

Curr Rheumatol Rep

VA Medical Center, 151K, University and Woodland Avenues, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA.

Published: June 2004

Crystal identification in joint fluid has been an essential part of diagnosis of joint disease. Recent advances have included progress in crystal identification on stained slides, attention to aspiration techniques, and arthrocenteses of asymptomatic joints. Challenges remain to increase use and optimize techniques.

The D-lactate enigma: exploring the inflammatory influence of D-lactate in cattle.

Front Vet Sci

December 2024

Laboratory of Inflammation Pharmacology and Immunometabolism, Institute of Pharmacology and Morphophysiology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile.

D-lactic acidosis is associated with fermentative disturbances and is often marked by elevated levels of D-lactic acid in the blood, ruminal fluid, and synovial fluid in cattle. D-lactic acidosis is linked to various inflammatory manifestations, and although the causative factors have been extensively explored, the exact pathogenesis of the associated inflammation remains elusive. Notably, less attention has been given to D-lactate, a stereoisomer found in the plasma of affected animals, which may lead to D-lactic acidosis.

Electronic address:

Nitrogen dioxide (NO) is an important contaminant that poses a severe threat to environmental sustainability. Traditional inorganic NO gas detectors are generally used under harsh operating conditions and employ environmentally unfriendly resources, thus preventing widespread practical applications. Herein, self-assembled peptide microtubes (SPMTs) are combined with SnO nanoparticles (NPs) to develop a bioinspired NO gas sensor.

Subtypes of brain change in aging and their associations with cognition and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.

Structural brain changes underlie cognitive changes and interindividual variability in cognition in older age. By using structural MRI data-driven clustering, we aimed to identify subgroups of cognitively unimpaired older adults based on brain change patterns and assess how changes in cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume relate to cognitive change. We tested (1) which brain structural changes predict cognitive change (2) whether these are associated with core cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Alzheimer's disease biomarkers, and (3) the degree of overlap between clusters derived from different structural modalities in 1899 cognitively healthy older adults followed up to 16 years.

Introduction: Very rarely, adult NMDAR antibody-associated encephalitis (NMDAR-E) leads to persistent cerebellar atrophy and ataxia. Transient cerebellar ataxia is common in pediatric NMDAR-E. Immune-mediated cerebellar ataxia may be associated with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), aquaporin-4 (AQP-4), kelch-like family member 11 (KLHL11), and glutamate kainate receptor subunit 2 (GluK2) antibodies, all of which may co-occur in NMDAR-E.

There are several differential diagnoses for knee monoarthritis. We report a patient with recurrent episodes of knee effusion, in which the non-specific clinical condition implied several diagnostic hypotheses, therapeutic inaccuracies, and a delay in implementing adequate treatment. For more than 2 years, the patient underwent different Orthopedics and Rheumatology visits.
