Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis (DSO) is a non-bacterial disease of the jawbone, characterized by intermittent pain, swelling, and a mixture of osteosclerosis and osteolysis on radiographs. Its etiology remains unclear, and a standard treatment, based on clear diagnostic criteria, has not been established. We present the case of a 48-year-old male patient, who was initially diagnosed with chronic mandibular osteomyelitis due to apical periodontitis in the right lower second premolar, and underwent antimicrobial medication and surgical therapy based on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bone scintigraphy.

Advances in tissue engineering and microfluidic technologies have enabled the development of sophisticated models known as organ-on-a-chip (OoC) or microphysiological systems. These systems enable to potential to simulate the dynamic interactions between host tissues and their microenvironment including microbes, biomaterials, mechanical forces, pharmaceutical, and consumer-care products. These fluidic technologies are increasingly being utilized to investigate host-microbe and host-material interactions in oral health and disease.

Disruption of the human microbiome has emerged as a major contributing factor in the etiology of neurodegenerative disease. Previous work suggests a positive correlation between periodontal inflammation and Parkinson's disease. Here, we show that feeding animals causes neurodegeneration that is not additive with neurodegeneration induced by the Parkinson's-associated protein, α-synuclein.
