The objective in the first phase of this study was to screen alfalfa, flatpea, sericea lespedeza, deertongue, reed canarygrass, switchgrass, and tall fescue for phytoremediation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated soil. During the second phase, the focus was rhizosphere characterization to optimize PCB phytoremediation. Aroclor 1248 (PCB) was added to soil at 100 mg x kg(-1) of soil. In the first phase, all of the plant species treatments showed significantly greater PCB biodegradation compared to the unplanted controls and the two most effective species were selected for further study. During the rhizosphere characterization study, soil irradiation did not affect PCB biodegradation, but planting significantly increased PCB biodegradation; 38% or less of the initial PCB was recovered from planted pots, compared to more than 82% from the unplanted control soils. Presence of plants significantly increased the biological activity (microbial counts and enzyme activity) of both irradiated and unirradiated soils. Greater bacterial counts and soil enzyme activity were closely related to higher levels of PCB biodegradation. The data showed that Aroclor 1248 biodegradation in soil seem to be positively influenced by the presence of plants and plant-bacteria interactions. Our results suggested that phytoremediation could be an environmentally friendly alternative for PCB-contaminated soils.

Background: Lysinuric protein intolerance is a rare autosomal disorder caused by mutations in the Slc7a7 gene that lead to impaired transport of neutral and basic amino acids. The gold standard treatment for lysinuric protein intolerance involves a low-protein diet and citrulline supplementation. While this approach partially improves cationic amino acid plasma levels and alleviates some symptoms, long-term treatment is suggested to be detrimental and may lead to life-threatening complications characterized by a wide range of hematological and immunological abnormalities.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are recalcitrant organic pollutants often detected in stormwater. Various stormwater control measures (SCMs) can remove PAHs and PCBs by filtration, adsorption, and biodegradation. However, dissolved PAHs and PCBs remain present in the treated outflow of SCMs.

Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are widely distributed across the globe, including polar regions. This study investigates the distribution and bioconcentration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and Colobanthus quitensis, while also estimating potential emission sources. Results indicated high concentrations of PAHs in soils and plants from the Sub-Antarctic region, while OCPs and PCBs were more prevalent in the Antarctic region, with higher contaminant concentrations found in soils than in plant tissues.

This investigation represents a pioneering effort to examine the therapeutic effects of PCB specifically in the context of CFA-induced mice, as well as to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that facilitate such effects. Our study utilized advanced methodologies, namely high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS)-based metabolomics, alongside comprehensive multivariate data analysis, to identify a distinctive metabolic profile associated with acute inflammation. Through our analyses, we discovered that several potential metabolites were significantly implicated in a variety of critical metabolic pathways.

This study investigated the consequences of perinatal exposure to Aroclor 1221 (A1221), a weakly estrogenic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixture and known endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), in female rats. Previous work has shown behavioral and physiological effects of A1221, and the current study extended this work to comprehensive transcriptomic profiling of two hypothalamic regions involved in the control of reproduction: the arcuate nucleus (ARC) and anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV). Female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a cookie treated with a small volume of A1221 (1 mg/kg) or vehicle (3% DMSO in sesame oil) during pregnancy from gestational days 8-18 and after birth from postnatal (P) days 1-21, exposing the offspring via placental and lactational transfer.
