Digital microscopy using phase-shifting digital holography with two reference waves.

A lensless, coherent optical microscope is described that uses a version of phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH) in conjunction with a field backpropagation algorithm to form coherent images of transmission-type objects. The PSDH is implemented by use of only two reference waves, in contrast with the usual implementation that requires four quadrature phase-shifting reference waves. Therefore only two digital holograms need to be recorded, and the complexity of the microscopic system is reduced. Experimental results are presented that compare images generated from conventional Gabor digital holography, two-reference-wave PSDH, and conventional white-light microscopy.

Plastic film, also known as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), poses serious environmental challenges due to mass production, short life cycle, and poor waste management. The main aim of this paper was to examine the suitability of using agricultural waste film as a binder in construction composites instead of the traditional cement slurry. Molten at temperatures of around 120-150 °C wastes was mixed with fine sand and gravel aggregate as filler.

Significance: Imaging flow cytometry allows highly informative multi-point cell analysis for biological assays and medical diagnosis. Rapid processing of the imaged cells during flow allows real-time classification and sorting of the cells. Off-axis holography enables imaging flow cytometry without chemical cell staining but requires digital processing to the optical path delay profile for each frame before the cells can be classified, which slows down the overall processing throughput.
