Effects of zeolites as a food supplement have been studied on Wistar rats both in vivo perfusion experiments in the jejunum and distal colon and Rb fluxes through intestinal wall in the Ussing chamber. It has been found that zeolites decrease the K+ absorption and stimulate K+ secretion in the gut. This effect was due to inhibition of the apical N(+)-K(+)-ATPase and ouabain-sensitive Na(+)-independent K(+)-ATPase as well as the activation of the basolateral N(+)-K(+)-ATPase.

A novel fluorescence sensing nanoplatform (CDs/AuNCs@ZIF-8) encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) within a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was developed for ratiometric detection of formaldehyde (FA) in the medium of hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NHOH·HCl). The nanoplatform exhibited pink fluorescence due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect of AuNCs and the internal filtration effect (IFE) between AuNCs and CDs. Upon reaction between NHOH·HCl and FA, a Schiff base formed via aldehyde-diamine condensation, releasing hydrochloric acid.

Biomineralization of enzymes inside rigid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is appealing due to its biocompatibility and simplicity. However, this strategy has hitherto been limited to microporous MOFs, leading to low apparent enzymatic activity. In this study, polysaccharide sodium alginate is introduced during the biomineralization of enzymes in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to competitively coordinate with metal ions, which endows the encapsulated enzyme with a 7-fold higher activity than that in microporous ZIFs.

The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) must be transformed into Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) in view of a more sustainable approach focusing on the circular economy concept. Different to WWTPs, the WRRFs have as a major goal not only the wastewater treatment to meet the legislation limits but also the recovery of resources such as: treated water for water reuse, carbon, nutrients, biopolymers etc. In view of boosting the WRRFs application in the real WWTs, a WRRF at Palermo University (UNIPA) has been built within the EU project: Achieving Wider-Uptake of Water Smart Solutions.
