Fungi are well known for their ability to both produce and catabolize complex carbohydrates to acquire carbon, often in the most extreme of environments. Glucuronoxylomannan (GXM)-based gel matrices are widely produced by fungi in nature and though they are of key interest in medicine and pharmaceuticals, their biodegradation is poorly understood. Though some organisms, including other fungi, are adapted to life in and on GXM-like matrices in nature, they are almost entirely unstudied, and it is unknown if they are involved in matrix degradation.

Mannan and β-(1→3)-glucan are two polysaccharide markers that are characteristic for a number of fungal pathogens, including , which is the most common cause of invasive mycoses in humans. In this study, we examined epitope specificity of two monoclonal antibodies, CM532 and FG70, which recognize certain oligosaccharide fragments of these fungal polysaccharides. Using a panel of biotinylated oligosaccharides as coating antigens, we found that the CM532 antibody obtained by immunization with the pentamannoside β-Man-(1→2)-β-Man-(1→2)-α-Man-(1→2)-α-Man-(1→2)-α-Man KLH conjugate, selectively recognizes the trisaccharide β-Man-(1→2)-α-Man-(1→2)-α-Man epitope.

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Basic Medicine, Qingdao University, 308 Ningxia Road, Qingdao 266071, China.

A fucoidan oligosaccharide (FOS), a potent compound derived from algae, is known for its diverse biological activities, including prebiotic activity, anticancer activity, and antioxidative properties, and has demonstrated supportive therapeutic effects in treating kidney ailments. This study was conducted to explore the protective influence of FOS on kidney damage due to aging induced by D-galactose in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The low-dose FOS group was administered FOS (100 mg/kg) by gavage, and the high-FOS group received FOS (200 mg/kg) by gavage.

Distinguishing between endo- and exo-type enzymes within the glycoside hydrolase (GH) classification presents significant challenges. Traditional methods, often based on endpoint activity measurements, do not capture the full range of products generated, leading to inconsistencies in classification. Not all exo-acting fructanases and glucanases produce monosaccharides (like fructose or glucose), while endo-acting enzymes do not solely produce higher-degree polymerization oligosaccharides.

Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) and mortality among survivors of liver cirrhosis: a prospective cohort study.

Nutr J

January 2025

Department of Nutrition Research, National Nutrition and Food Technology Research Institute and Faculty of Nutrition Sciences and Food Technology, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, West Arghavan St. Farahzadi Blvd., Sharake Qods, Tehran, Iran.

Background: Cirrhosis is a medical condition marked by persistent liver damage, which leads to the development of fibrous tissue and compromised liver function. In the present study, we decided to investigate the possibility of a connection between the consumption of fermentable olig-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) and mortality rates in cirrhotic patients by utilizing data obtained from a prospective cohort study.

Methods: This cohort study enrolled 166 ambulatory patients from two hospitals in Tehran, Iran, between 2016 and 2018, and followed them up for 5 48 months until April 30, 2022.
